My 12 year old has been having more dandruff / oily hair recently. I don't know if it's because we've been in the sun a lot this summer and her skin is flaking off or if it's because of hormones. Poor girl - she's definitely distressed about it. Any recommendations for dandruff control shampoo? She switches between Costco/Kirkland shampoo and Tea Tree shampoo from Trader Joes. She and I would appreciate any recommendations.

My girls (8 and 10) sometimes get dandruff and they use regular Head and Shoulders as needed (usually they use for about a week or two to get it under control, then go back to their normal Honest Shampoo).

We use head and shoulders too - and just for oily hair (not even dandruff).

DD1 (12 yo) has been using Head and Shoulders but recently switched to Dove Dandruff shampoo and really likes it. It seems to be working really well and is a little less "old person shampoo" as she says https://www.dove.com/us/en/hair-care/solutions-for-dandruff.html

Head and shoulders "oil control" shampoo https://www.walmart.com/ip/Head-and-Shoulders-Instant-Oil-Control-2-in-1-Anti-Dandruff-Shampoo-Conditioner-12-8-Fl-Oz/40694210

DD has also been using the Loreal clay line for oily scalp but I don't think it works any better than the H&S but it's more $$ and a much stronger perfume to it. Going back to H&S. Also a light conditioner will help replace the oils lost to shampoo and prevent the scalp from working overtime to compensate. Our hairstylist just shared this one when I asked (I'd been having her just use conditioner from her ears down) so I can't say how well it works since we just started.

We started alternating Head and Shoulders with this Tresemme deep cleansing shampoo. Seemed to work well when this issue was a problem.

I wonder if using a shampoo scalp brush in the shower would help.

I've found that the thing that works best for me is the Neutrogena T-gel with coal tar shampoo. Definitely feels like old person shampoo. Or even dog shampoo. But it works. [emoji53]

DD1 has been using Nizoral shampoo and Selsun Blue. Both seem to have improved her dandruff issue.

Using a dandruff shampoo on treats the symptom but not the underlying issue. Is there a fungal/yeast problem? Dandruff can also be a sign of system imbalance or food sensitivity.

ACV rinse is a good nonharse alternative to the shampoos.

Coconut oil is good for scalp issues as well so maybe an oil treatment would help. Tea tree, lavender EOs are good to add a drop or two in the coconut oil to boost activity. Again though this is just a bandaid solution until you address the root cause.

Didn't I read here that tea tree and lavender should be avoided due to natural estrogens?

I think I read this study here, years ago.

Thanks for all the replies. I bought some Dove shampoo to start with. If that doesn't help, we'll escalate to the other suggestions.
