Both of my kids start next Wednesday 8/9. One in junior high and one in elementary. Our schools are super early, but they got out at the end of May. The other neighboring cities seem to start at the end of August.

August 23. We used to start earlier until the governor sold out to the tourism lobby and signed into law that public schools couldn't start until 8/23...after the state fair. Many districts wants to be able to start earlier so the high school kids could take community college classes and to have finals finished before winter break. But of course $$$ talks and the governor doesn't care about education.

My kids are in a private school and I'm not sure when our school district starts but I think it's this week or next? Our school usually starts late and ends earlier than the public schools around here. Our first day of school is the Thursday before Labor Day and we are done on May 25th next year.

Always the day after Labor Day in our district, and most of the state. About ready to make a paper chain to count down the days... ;) :ROTFLMAO:

DS2 is in an independent charter and starts August 24th.

We're always the Wednesday after Labor Day. My husband teaches for the high school district and they start a week before.

We are always the Wednesday before Labor Day. Don't get out until the third week of June (depending on snow days).

We start a week earlier this year. Aug 14th last day of school is May 24. We had a slight shift in the start date to accommodate high school students being able to take their mid terms before Christmas break vs just after.

The local school district starts on August 30th and are out June 14th.

My kids go to Catholic school and they start on August 23rd and are out on June 14th. They have random days off for religious education conference, day after the fair ends, Friday before Memorial Day, and a few other half days (including the first 3 days of school) so everything works out to be the same time in class as the public schools even though they start a week earlier. Breaks are the same as the public school.

Public middle school 8/23
My sister is a teacher-librarian and her school district 8/16 (she's 20 minutes away - we have multiple public districts in our area)

High school DS will be going to in 2018 is a separate district and they start the week of the 15th, not sure exact date.

We don't have snow days so end of school is pretty much set every year (can't remember how Loma Prieta affected schools, I was in college at the time, but that's about the only thing that would delay)

Michigan law says we can't start prior to Labor Day. But, districts can get waivers. We start August 28 this year.

The law is because of tourism. But with school starting the day after Labor Day, we never go anywhere that weekend. This year, we are going up north for the weekend, since we'll have a week of school behind us and it's just easier to come back for week 2, than for day 1.

Our district starts August 21 and is out the first week of June--makes sense to me. My kids are in Catholic schools. One starts August 14--too early and is out the third week of May (which leaves me with 1-2 weeks of no childcare because camps don't start that early). The other one starts August 30--on a Wednesday. Which leaves me with 2 weeks of no childcare because camps don't run that late. She gets out the last week of June. Fer cryin out loud, you would think the Diocese could be on the same freaking schedule!!

If you are starting school this week are you done by the middle of May or is this early start to deal with need for snow days?

We don't start until Aug 15th, though that is late for us. We have not had snow days in a couple years and there aren't any built in to the calendar. We have Labor Day, 2 days in Oct, 3 days at Thanksgiving, 2 weeks at Christmas, MLK, Pres Day, 1 wk + 1 day for Spring Break, and Memorial Day. Last Day is May 31st.

Most of the districts around here that started last week or this week have a balanced calendar and get longer breaks. For example there is a district on the other side of town that started back July 26th, but they have two weeks off in October, two weeks in Dec and two weeks in March, finishing just before Memorial Day.

Aug.18, we start later this year as the district built 2 new schools and moved 6th grade back to elementary buildings. Usually start around August 11th.They are out mid to late May and usually have 2 or 3 snow days tacked on at the end. (Usually they get out the week before Memorial Day.)

Monday, August 28 for my county. Per NC law "Start date no earlier than the Monday closest to August 26 and end date no later than the Friday closest to June 11 ", unless of course you're in a year round/modified year round/private school.
