Last Thursday through Wednesday I had a HORRIBLE headache. Not sure if it is a migraine, related to the dull persistent month-long headache, or from hitting my eye the previous week. I had labwork done on Monday...clean head CT and no vision/eye issues per OD, but I have some issues with my labwork. One of which is that I have elevated liver function tests levels so no NSAIDS. I am on vacation. Just arrived after a long drive. Although my headache isn't nearly as bad as it was earlier in the week, it's still very present and putting a kink in my vacation plans, as relaxing as they may be. So...I have no idea if I have a migraine but Imitrex isn't helping and I cannot take Excedrin, Tylenol, etc because of the NSAID issue. Any BTDT advice for headaches and no NSAID use?? I saw something about the herb Feverfew for migraines but I have environmental allergies and am afraid it might put my system in allergy overdrive (it happened with goldenseal root in the past). Help me please...I hope. I am sitting here with 2 benedryl in my system hoping that I won't wake up constantly like the last few nights. Oh...I also have also Tramadol...it doesn't work but I am REALLY NOT keen on taking narcotics anyway (it floors me how quickly they prescribe them).

Magnesium is good for headache and migraines. B-12/complex. Both of these can relieve but are more preventive. Boswellia pills, which are from frankincense resin are also anti-inflammatory and I've had some success with them for headaches.
Feel better!!

Did the doctor tell you no NSAIDS or no Tylenol? Tylenol is the one that is broken down by the liver, so would be a No No if you are elevated. NSAIDS, like motrin and Aleve (ibuprofen) are mostly broken down by the kidneys, and if those are fine you should be able to take a dose. That is what I take for my headaches.

OOh, try magnesium. We are using that in the ER now for headaches. I had forgotten about that.

MigreLief! This was recommended by dd's concussion specialist and neurologist for headaches that resulted from her concussion, but it is good for migraines too. Magnesium is included in the ingredients. Dd's doctors say it helps the best if you take it regularly as a preventative, but when dd's headaches were better she found they helped when she didn't take it as often as well. Of course, I don't know that it would stop the pain of a severe migraine if you werent taking it regularly, but here is the website

I sudafed (the behind the counter but not rx type) might help. And some caffeine.

I had elevated liver tests once, and my doc also told me no NSAIDs. He also told me no vitamins or herbs as they often can raise liver function tests too so you might want to check with your doc before taking anything. Instead I'd drink extra water and maybe try a massage?

I do two ibuprofen and a half a can of coke for my migraines. Magnesium also helps. Ice packs. Sleep. And, I know it sounds crazy, but I listen to Binaural beats for bad ones that last too long. It really works. Read the comments, lots of people have relief from listening to BB. If this one doesnt work for you, try another. Lots of different ones to choose from. I use them for all of my stupid ailments.

can you take aspirin? I'd do that and lots of caffeine.

If you're prone to them, I also use an EO with a fair amt of success. Its not a cure all, but really does help. http://www.tea-n-sanity.com/products/Headache%7B47%7DMigraine-Oil-Synergy.html Obviously wont help for this headache since you'd have to order it.

You put a drop on pulse points - wrists, ears and temples. If I use it fast enough with a bunch of caffeine, I can avoid the meds or at least cut it to a round or 2 instead of the 24-48h I've been cycling through recently. I know its been working b/c I ran out after dropping and breaking the bottle and just had my mom bring me more. Good luck!

Ice packs in a dark cool room, preferably with a fan, massage, benadryl, caffeine...all things to try. I'm so sorry about the nsaids...that stinks!

Two Benadryl and sleep usually work for me, but if it is really bad I will add two Advil. I try to take magnesium on a daily basis as well.

Caffeine with real sugar. Coke, a coffee, whatever. Stay away from diet drinks

Fat and calories. My ideal is chocolate cheesecake. That plus a soda does wonders for the tail end of a bad migraine.

Did they tell you what your sinus cavities looked like on the CT scan? I had a similar sounding headache and turned out it was a massive sinus infection from allergies that I didn't even know I had. The doctor told me I'd likely had it for over 6 months. Took 3 weeks of heavy antibiotics and a week of prednisone and I felt like a new woman! Just thought I'd mentioned it since you mentioned allergies. Around here ragweed is just starting and so far it's horrible.
