My iPhone 5 is close to dying, so it's time for a new one. I looked at new phones about a year or so ago, and remember the price around $600-$700. Is that right? Is there a cheaper place to purchase? Target? Apple? AT&T store?

AT&T is our provider.

Try Costco if you're a member.

Are you a long-time ATT subscriber? I had the same thing happen when I finally gave up my iPhone 5 last Fall. I didn't want to pay a fortune for the 7, so I called ATT and got the 6SE for just $199 - if you are a long-time subscriber, ask for the loyalty customer service center, and they will offer you some lower prices than retail. At the time, the SE was listed on their website for maybe $400, so you definitely need to call the loyalty line to get this offer.

Maybe take a page from the cable company and ask for a "Retention Specialist"?

And, research their competition. US Cellular always seems to have good deals to steal people away. Even if you have no intent to go, know what they and others are offering!

Are you looking to stay with AT&T postpaid? If not, you may want to check out their non-contract option (used to be GoPhone). DH and I got iPhone SE's for $199 (plus the $45 monthly plan for each phone) this past spring. I think they are still running this option as well as some months free if you do a monthly plan. I read on Howard Forums that Best Buy had a deal recently for AT&T GoPhone with the SE and the 6 costing slightly less than what AT&T has them for on their site.

Thanks for asking this. DH needs to replace his antique iPhone and has been with AT&T for many years. I wouldn't have thought to call AT&T to do it.

I have gotten two really good deals at Target for my DDs for AT&T. We had AT&T Next at the time. Last December one wanted the SE and Target was offering a $200 giftcard, which was like getting it for $199. My other one got an iphone 7 with a $250 gift card a while back, and she used birthday money to buy the rest. The catch with that one was we had to add a new line. So we canceled her old number and started this one. Totally worth it! And since we often get our groceries at Target that giftcard was very helpful. I don't get as enticed by the ones at Best Buy since I don't normally buy stuff there anyway. Suffice to say they are not getting new phones for the next few years!

If you are okay with buying pre-owned, check out Swappa. I recently bought DH a Samsung Galaxy S7 for $200 below retail in excellent condition. They have tons of iphones on there. You just need to check the IMEI and make sure it is icloud unlocked .

I'm not sure what the usual time frame is with regard to price drops and new phones being released, but since there are new phones coming out this fall, I would research that before buying now, if your phone will make it that long. What are you shopping for? SE's are nice and small, like the 5 you have, if you are happy with it.

I just got DH a SE for $160 with Consumer Cellular. We don't use much data, though - I know that option doesn't work for everybody - we can get it unlocked after 6 months, which is only an issue for us when we travel abroad and switch the SIM cards out.
