I just heard that an extended-family member whose son has tried various meds for ADHD is pursuing genetic testing to try to target the meds better. Any experience with this, or info about whether it is generally helpful? (I have a slightly prickly relationship with the mom, and don't want to ask her, but since there are other family members with ADHD who use meds, I'd like to understand this better.)

I don't know if it's the same thing we did, but we had some genetic testing done on DD to see if she was a fast metabolizer or normal for medication, if I recall.

This just came up with a friend this week. Her grandmother has Alzheimer's and went to a doctor that looks at DNA to determine which medications will be most effective. In this case the Dr. specializes in Alzheimer's but friend said she has quite a following in our hometown.

Genesight does this.

I had it done for my youngest but don't know how helpful it is since I've taken him off all ADHD meds since testing. It's very expensive but they claim you won't pay more tha $300 OOP.

I've thought about it since DS1 was just diagnosed with ADHD. But I don't think we have any labs nearby. Right now we are on med #2 and it seems to work. I could tell med #1 did nothing.
