6 yo ds has a low grade fever, taken underarm around 100.1, 100.4 etc.. took him to see doc as he has swollen lymph nodes, hurt during swallowing, and stuffy nose but no drainage at all. hard for him to sleep with the stuffy nosethey said ears are clear, strep is negative, so just give fluids, humidifier etc.. would you give tylenol for a 100.5 F fever. he is acting ok, more calmer and tired than usual... gave him saline mist throught the day and now flonase...

No, I've never treated a fever with meds before.

To be honest, I wouldn't give the Tylenol for that level of fever, but I would give Motrin for the swelling/ discomfort. The fever is so slight, it's his body doing it's job fighting whatever he has. But the Motrin might help him feel better and sleep. I'd also give elderberry.

I think Tylenol is useless for fevers. Ibuprofen is much better. But, I wouldn't give for that temp unless they feel extra crummy.

I would give Motrin. Fevers always go up at night, so I would medicate before bed.

Nope. Fever is the body's way of killing off germs. I medicate for pain or misery but not low/medium fevers

I'm another no, I give it only for pain. My pediatrician advises not giving drugs to fight fevers unless it's very high (like higher than I've ever experienced.) It's how the body fights infection.

No, we don't medicate fevers.

I would give Motrin. Even though the temp isn't high, I know I am uncomfortable when I have the symptoms you described and the Motrin often takes the edge off it- even if it doesn't help the stuffiness, it often helps me with the pain that comes from sinus pressure.

Not for that temp and only a temp. If he starts feeling crummy then I'd do ibuprofen

I'm pretty much in the don't medicate fevers camp, although two weeks ago when my 13 month old had an underarm fever of 103.8, I gave Motrin. I don't give anything for low grade fever.

While I have generally thought that fever helps fight off illness, high fevers are not good for your body. I just learned this from our ped when DD had pneumonia, that we should try to bring the fever down.

That said, I would not do meds at that low fever.

It depends on how they feel. If they feel awful, even though it's only 100.5, I would alternate Tylenol and Ibuprofen. If they feel fine I'd address the other issues, stuffy nose, coughing, etc.

I wouldn't give anything during the day if they weren't miserable, but I would give ibuprofen at night just to hopefully help then sleep better.

I would give either tylenol or motrin at night to help them feel better and sleep. During the day, if my kids have a fever and feel really crappy, I'll give them something. I don't think it prolongs the sickness and they can feel better while they heal. But if they have a low fever and feel ok, I wouldn't give them anything. But in my house, fever=feeling crappy.

Meds for discomfort at that temp. I only give for much higher fevers, but those always have more significant discomfort anyway.

My husband would though. So fever phobic.
