DDs’ teachers have a parent read aloud time slot every other week. Most slots are empty so I’ll likely go more than once, so I need several titles. Teacher says the class loves funny books, so that’s ideal, but anything that would appeal to 8-9 yr old boys and girls would be great.

TIA! My first reading day is tomorrow.

I'd try for a chapter of a Mrs. Piggle Wiggle book. Most of the books are structured such that individual chapters are self-contained, rather than part of a larger plot, and they are very funny. I recall loving them as a kid, but it wasn't until I was re-reading them to my kids that I realized how delightfully snarky they are.

If you need a picture book, my kids all still really like The Book With No Pictures, though it is very silly.

Really? My kids' school does this too, I think it's a lot of fun and a great way to connect families to the classroom. My kids love when either DH or I is able to come in and read to the class, they do a mini reading section maybe every other Friday. What do you find strange about it?

ETA: forgot to add my suggestions! What about a chapter or two from Roald Dahl, maybe the BFG?

It's a book series [emoji6]

For something short enough but still engaging for that age group try Robert Munsch.

I read the Scrambled States of America book to my DS's 3rd grade class some years back. It is a hilarious book and all the kids loved it. Would appeal to both boys and girls too.

I'm sorry! Yes, funniest series ever. Written by Dan Gutman (amazing author). I read to Ds' class and the chapter was a hit. Kids laughing hysterically.

I like Fortunately, the Milk by Neil Gaiman, but it might take longer than your time slot. (Took me about 35 minutes to read out loud with DD.)

We love The Book with No Pictures here.

I'm also partial to Bringing the Rain to Kapiti Plain (an African folk tale from the Nandi people, retold by Verna Aardema) for read-alouds, but it's not funny. It is a lot of fun to read, though.

Thanks for all the great ideas! Here's what I ended up reading:

Mother Bruce by Ryan Higgins
My Lucky Day by Keiko Kasza
Red: A Crayon's Story by Michael Hall
Creepy Carrots and
Creepy Pair of Underwear both by Aaron Reynolds

All were well received and got plenty of laughs. :)
