View Full Version : Help Me Accessorize - Flannel Shirt with Dark-Wash Jeans

MIL told DH and I that she wanted our whole extended family to wear plaid flannel to our family pre-Christmas get-together with her sister.

I asked DH if she was serious; apparently, she is.

So, DD was easy, but I think I need some accessorizing help so I don't look like a lumberjack in this shirt I bought (in red & black, no longer available; of course) to coordinate with hers:

Women's Plaid Flannel Shirt (https://www.kohls.com/product/prd-2991484/plus-size-croft-barrow-plaid-flannel-shirt.jsp?color=Plaid%20Snowflake%20Black&prdPV=1)

I have dark-wash bootcut jeans.

I do not have skinny jeans, leggings, jeggings, boots, booties, belts, or accessories beyond a handful of bracelets and necklaces.

My hips and legs are Very Heavy, so I would prefer not to deal with leggings/jeggings or skinnies when I already have jeans that fit.

The party will take place on 12/16, so I have a couple of weeks to come up with something.

I would try and break up the plaid some, wear an infinity scarf, or a vest over the shirt, or leave it unbuttoned with a cute t- shirt underneath.

If you aren't committed to that shirt, maybe go for something plaid, but not specifically flannel, like this:

This blog post has some good ideas. You can totally sub in your dark boot cut jeans for the skinny pants in the pics.

https://www.puttingmetogether.com/red-plaid-button-up-outfits/

I find that it helps a lot to roll up the sleeves and either use a scarf or leave the neckline open a few buttons and wear a cute necklace. I usually use a light vest over. Old Navy has a cute one that's thin so it doesn't add bulk but it's good visually. Here's a link: http://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/product.do?pcid=5151&vid=1&pid=774360002 (There were more colors available last night so I'd suggest checking in store if you're interested.)

This vest would probably work too: https://www.kohls.com/product/prd-3040789/womens-croft-barrow-ribbed-side-quilted-vest.jsp?color=Black&prdPV=5

I also play with tucking in the front a bit vs leaving it all out because sometimes one looks better than the other.

Are you open to a new shirt? I love plaid shirts, and have a t my favorite one is this cheap Target gingham one! https://www.target.com/p/women-s-long-sleeve-gingham-any-day-shirt-a-new-day-153-green/-/A-52568250#lnk=sametab

My mom bought it after she saw it and so did my hairdresser. I usually wear it half tucked into the dreaded skinny jeans, but if you don’t want that pairing maybe an infinity scarf as suggested above. A black chunky knit one would be cute. I would add fashion sneakers, my favorite are adidas neo.

These are my favorite sneakers — I have them in navy, charcoal, and burgundy. Totally excessive, I know, but I love them and they’re so comfortable for me.

Thanks guys!

I'm kind of committed to the shirt because I just want to be done with everything. (Also, it was $11.99 with coupons and sale pricing, so I'm not out a ton of money for something I probably won't wear again.) But, if it doesn't fit or look right when it's on, I'll have to regroup.

I hadn't considered a vest. DH keeps trying to get me to try them, and I keep telling him it's going to make me look fat. I'll give it a go.

I'll look at scarves, too. I can do a scarf without feeling stupid.

Those sneakers are super-cute, but I can't wear adidas; they're cut too narrow.

*sigh* I really hate shopping.

My friend recently wore a string of pearls with her flannel shirt and dark jeans. I wouldn't have thought of it, but it was very cute. Just the right amount of dressing up and easy.

Like regular size pearls, chunky ones, or a long (like flapper-style) necklace? That sounds like something fun to try, too.

I think the shirt + bootcut jeans is fine. I would just add some fun earrings and call it a day.

That said, if you want another option and your MIL didn't specify a plaid flannel shirt, you could do a plaid scarf/wrap and solid shirt. I have a lightweight plaid wrap thingy that looks nice twisted up and thrown around my neck. There are tons of options out there right now, and many are pretty inexpensive.

blanket scarf (http://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=775285022&vid=1&locale=en_US&kwid=1&sem=false&sdkw=flannel-blanket-scarf-for-women-P775285&brandCvoSid=DES5Q3M77W2Q&sdReferer=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.oldnavy.com%2Fproducts% 2Fwomens-scarves.jsp) (these are often lighter than you'd expect, so not necessarily super warm)
another blanket scarf
(https://www.kohls.com/product/prd-3018415/apt-9-classic-plaid-blanket-square-scarf.jsp?color=Ivory&prdPV=3)oversized scarf (http://www.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=119320012&vid=1&locale=en_US&kwid=1&sem=false&sdkw=cozy-oversized-plaid-scarf-P119320&sdReferer=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.gap.com%2Fproducts%2Fwo mens-scarves.jsp) (Gap is 40% off today)
traditional plaid scarf (https://www.kohls.com/product/prd-3044469/apt-9-plaid-pashmina-oblong-scarf.jsp?color=Red%20Multi&prdPV=8)
Kohls has tons more.

She specified a shirt. I now have a shirt and it cost me less than $12.

I really do need a belt or something because the shirt is blousey over my waist & down to my hips, so I look sloppy without any definition of my waist.

What about unbuttoning it some with a tank top under?
Tuck the front in/ leave the back out?
Do a tie front, 80s style (trendy again!)?

The tie-front scares me, but I'm going to play with the half-tucked.

I actually don't own any tank tops, so I'd have to look for something nice, maybe with a lacy neckline? (pairing super-feminine with a bit more "rugged" style shirt - it's quite boxy, but I think I'd have been stupid not to order the Plus size.)

Hmmm. I was thinking a short sleeve pullover poncho type sweater to go on top, letting the flannel peek thru (sleeves, neckline, hem). Kinda like this:

She wore regular sized pearls, but chunky ones could go too I think! I'd stick to a shorter length (as opposed to flapper style) and shirt tucked in however you feel most comfortable. I'd steer clear of the vest. I think it wouldn't work and oftentimes does add too much bulk. And stick with the jeans you own and feel comfortable in. Confidence goes a long way to looking good! :)

I don't know if I could make that work. Ponchos look really sloppy on me and it will be VERY warm in the house with 20-odd people there.

I love pearls with a flannel, and jeans!
I like this size, single strand, worn against skin, not outside on shirt.

I think a black puffer vest is the answer to your accessories question. The putting me together link above is spot on. I would wear a heeled bootie with your boot cut jeans.

The hostess's house gets VERY warm, which is why I am incredibly reluctant to add another layer, clothing-wise.

I'm going to be 100% honest: "puffer vest" is a scary piece of clothing for me. I have broad shoulders and a full chest right now, along with a sort of short torso, so it can be very hard to find a vest that hits my body in the right places.

I'll give it a try if I manage to go out shopping this weekend. (Oh god; I hate shopping.)

I don't own boots or booties and don't know if I'd wear black for anything but this party, so I don't think it's practical. I'll probably just get black trouser socks and wear my reliable black heels instead. Much less $$.

For what it's worth the Old Navy puffer I linked above is the only one I've found that I like. It's thin and doesn't add much heat or bulk, especially when paired with rolled up shirt sleeves. Worst case scenario you take it off midway through and are still wearing a shirt with cute jewelry if you go that route.

Alternatively you could try a black skirt with the shirt like in the party style in the Putting Me Together link. It would address the heat concern as tights are usually cooler than jeans.

I’m not a vest person at all so keep that in mind...i don’t think that layer is needed nor do I think it’d be flattering.
I think you’d be better off with cute sneakers. There are a million options. Just go to DSW or somewhere and pick something. I think it’d be better than heels.
I think we’re all coming at this outfit with our own personal style. You have to figure out how you’ll feel most comfortable.

I think the shirt, boot cut jeans, your black heels (is anyone hoping to see the shoes in the photo anyways?) and pearls of your choice would look great. choose the pearls that best suit your style, traditional, chunky, flapper style...

It's not actually for a photo; it's for a family party. Shoes are whatever I want. I already have the black heels and trouser socks don't cost much.

I think the pearls sound like fun, so I bought a new, chunky pearl necklace (spent less than $15 on it, too, combining a sale with rewards and coupon codes)

While I am open to the idea of a cute shoe like a bootie/ankle boot or fashion sneaker, that would depend a lot on getting DH on board ... and I'd rather get him to buy me serious sneakers to replace my horribly worn out New Balances before our vacation than get a fashion sneaker that might look cute in a size 7 but awkward in a size 10.

Everyone deserves cute shoes. Your size 10s probably look totally normal size anyway!
What about some cute NB? I don’t know what kind you wear but they have lots of options that don’t scream “ugly athletic shoe”.

They're Mary Jane style and I get blisters without something on my feet no matter how well the shoe fits.

Maybe you're thinking sock-socks; when I say trouser socks, they're more like knee-highs.

I think that looks great!!!

Thanks so much! I've really been dreading the outfit because what looks super-cute on someone petite doesn't look as cute on someone bigger, and I am not petite.

I told DH that I wouldn't do this for anyone other than his mom.

You can't see it in the photo, mostly because the lighting in my bedroom is dreadful, but there's a thread of sparkly silver in the plaid check that makes the shirt a bit more fun. I'll be rolling up the sleeves and leaving buttons unbuttoned ... and doing the half-tucked thing if I can make it work.

And I also got DD a pearl necklace (https://www.target.com/p/girls-pearls-and-stars-statement-necklace-cat-jack-153-navy/-/A-52332567#lnk=sametab) to wear with her shirt (https://www.target.com/p/girls-long-sleeve-casual-woven-button-down-shirt-cat-jack-153-red/-/A-52824926#lnk=sametab) because she was peeved that she wasn't going to dress "fancy" for the party.

Your post inspired me to throw on some costume pearls the other day with a flannel shirt for our annual office party. I ended up wearing black leggings (because I wanted to wear boots and not flats).

If that’s the case, you need to buy a home waxer of some sort. Facial hair is just a don’t.

If money is an issue, honestly those personal trimmers are so cheap, and easy to use. Waxing the skin on your face can leave it red, irritated. For now, they might meet your needs until you are in a position to pay for your threading. It takes a few minutes and can be done anywhere (I keep one on my car console, the visor mirror is perfect and when I'm on the road I often see the peach fuzz, I can touch up in a minute, of course I make sure nobody is around). I also keep a
tweezers I'm my car, because it seems that's when I seem to find that stray hair that grows overnight!

Waxing and I no longer get along - I always break out.

I prefer threading, but I never tell DH when I have to go back because ... I just don't make myself a priority. I did finally tell him & went the Friday before the party.

Bottom line? I was red lipstick and makeup ready for Sunday.
