In the spirit of the new year, I've been reorganizing my kitchen a bit. We have a complete mish mash of drinking glasses and I'd like to get a new coordinating set. I'd prefer a timeless, simple style that is easily replaced if broken. If it helps any, we have simple white every day dishes that are a similar pattern to Crate and Barrel Aspen, Ikea 365, or the Pier 1 Luminous. I just want simple glasses, maybe a 12 oz size and a smaller size for juice or whatever. And something not pricey at all, esp with 3 kids in the house!

We still have our awesome Ikea small plastic cups which are great for the kids, esp when friends are over, but we are using regular glasses more and more these days.

Thanks in advance!

We use the Duralex Picardie glassware in different sizes. Durable, microwave and dishwasher safe too.

Tempered glasses cost more up front but have been amazing at not breaking, even when dropped on granite. We love ours from Williams Sonoma and stopped having to replace them since they are so much tougher.

We have the IKEA version of these. The Ikea ones aren't unbreakable though. I have a bunch of their tiny ones to use for mouthwash and have broken many!

We have the Duralex Picardie set from Costco (2011 or 2012?) and we haven’t had more than one of them break (I honestly don’t remember). We also have some nice 16 oz. Libbey Hoops pint style glasses (https://retail.libbey.com/product/16-pc-hoops-glassware-set/) my sister got us that have been super durable as well so we haven’t even used the larger Picardie glasses that came with the set. TBH I thought the Libbeys wouldn’t be as durable as the Picardies which is why I bought the Picardies (based on all of the awesome reviews here!), but they have held up quite well. We had a set of the Crate and Barrel Rings glasses (https://m.crateandbarrel.com/rings-glasses/f1702) like that kept breaking on us and weren’t very durable so I wouldn’t recommend them. I would go with Libbey or Picardie depending on style, but I do love that the Picardies can be used for hot water.

Another picardie fan - I have a few that I took from my parents house when I moved out that are 20+ years old. They are really nice to hold and drink out of as well and the stacking is great.

I think I've seen the Duralex glasses before. So just to clarify, all of the Duralex styles are tempered? Are the Picardie ones heavy? I was looking for something more simple like the Unie but also liked the Prisme.

Thanks!

I have the fiestaware glasses. I hit a killer sale at dillards a year ago and got them for 1.66 each. The colored bands hold up well. I use total plastics for the kids they have a bunch of Tervis those live in the cabinet beside the fridge.

Another Duralex fan here, too. We've had most of our set since we were married - 2 decades+ is pretty darn good.

They do get them now and again on Sierra Trading Post - they have a couple of styles now, in limited sizes. Might be a good way to try them out cheaply. Since STP is now part of the TJ Maxx group, it may also be worth looking in those stores for them.

For other tempered glass, Bormioli Rocco is another option. I would just make sure that any product description includes the word tempered. Also available on STP - they have 9 and 13 oz sizes in "Rock Bar", a good place to start size-wise. They look very like the Picardie.

Stay away from Crate and Barrel glasses. We got a set and they break in the dishwasher. I read reviews of other glasses, and people commented on same thing happening.

Logged in just to share our Duralex Picardie experience. Years ago, I bought a full set of them after reading rave reviews here for a while. We really loved them. Until one day, when our son (8-10 yrs old at the time) had one EXPLODE in his hand as he was unloading the dishwasher. Completely unprovoked and out of the blue. It was so forceful it sounded like a gunshot to me (in the other room). Did some Googling and found out they are not supposed to be stacked or bumped (!!) because if they do, they can store up that energy and spontaneously release it later. Um, hello! Not happening in this house. I bought them because they were stackable. And kids bump things. I'm just glad none of those little pieces went in his eye. I'm not saying this will happen to you, but I always feel obligated to mention that it *can*...and that was enough of a reason to get rid of them. I actually felt guilty taking them to Goodwill, so they sat in my basement for a couple years!

I must be the only one that got the Duralex Picardie and hated them. I don't know if it's the direction of the water dispenser in our fridge or what, but no matter what I do, the water splashes out of those glasses. I got some of the IKEA ones and didn't have the same problem with them. I also found that I don't really care to stack glasses, so that's not a benefit to me. My favorite glasses are still my Disney anniversary glasses from McDonald's :) I also have some Shrek ones (not the bonus lead ones from recent years).

We have the ikea pint glasses. We like them a lot. We drink a lot so those other glasses would be too small for me. I also like the clean look of the ikea pint glasses.

We use mason jars. They’re strong, come in different colors, and can be used for storage since they come with lids.

That happened to me once as well. It was quite shocking and the clean up of those gazillion tiny glass pieces is a serious pain. (Although I do understand why they're designed to do that - better tiny pieces than large shards that can cause serious injury.) I think I even posted on here about it. That said, it was one incident in nearly 20 years of use. So we've kept them (and still stack them) and haven't had any problems since.

For day to day use, we use stainless steel glasses. They are very hardy, dishwasher safe and stack small. We’ve had them for 10+ years and they are going strong. We also have 12 IKEA glasses, but rarely use them.

Yes, they can break and if they do they break into a trillion pieces, but it's still pretty rare. We've probably had 2 broken. I still prefer them as I've dropped them into the ceramic sink or onto the granite counter before without them breaking.

We have gone through the majority of the Picardie glasses from Costco, due to our tile kitchen floor. Those babies explode on tile. Now we use mason jars (the purple are so pretty).

We bought a set of the Duralex Picardie based on reviews here and had two explode in the dishwasher. One exploded in my son's hand. Threw them all away. Currently we are using wide mouth Mason jars because they're sturdy and cheap.

Can I just say, I keep reading this title as asking for "day-drinking glasses" and it is cracking me up. Probably says something about me....

We have tall and high-ball glasses from a restaurant supply store. They kinda look like Picardie with the flat sides, they aren't tapered / stackable. They just go straight down. I have no idea if they are tempered glass. I'm sure they were cheap, so I'm guessing not.

They are solid and heavy though. They've been in use for probably 25 years? (my husband got them before we were married). Through several moves - many apartments, three houses, etc. We've never broken one. Broken plenty of plates and bowls, etc. But never a glass.

Libbey pint glasses from Bed Bath and Beyond. I used a coupon and purchased a set for around $20, I think. If they break its not a big deal, I can get more.

I love the crate and barrell ring glasses (https://www.crateandbarrel.com/rings-glasses/f1702). I think the quality has improved because I haven't had one break in at least 7 years maybe longer. I have the juice and old fashioned ones, and they are a good weight and pretty. They are cheap, stack, come in various sizes, and since they have had them for 20+ years, I imagine they will continue to carry them! So even if they do break occasionally, I'm ok with that.

I also always pick up a set of these ikea glasses when I'm there, as I love the designs and they are cheap. But they do break. The designs change about once a year for this set/size, but I don't mind mixing and matching and I love the size, so it's worth the $6 investment.

I also usually buy some of these when I'm at Ikea, and find myself drinking wine out of them on weeknights...
