View Full Version : Gah! I have no idea what to get DH for his birthday!

I need ideas! DH's birthday is in a few weeks. So far I've purchased a baseball hat from his fav MLB team. For Xmas he got things he specifically asked for like warm hunting socks, sport socks, shirt/tie, hunting binoculars. For Valentine's Day I'm giving him whiskey, whiskey stones, and a whiskey glass. He likes to cook, garden, deer hunt. He's a teacher and dresses conservatively...always dress shirt and tie for work...basic jeans and button down or polo shirt on weekends. He likes tech stuff but I can't think of any gadgets he needs. He likes Star Wars but not in the "collectibles" kind of way. He's already stocked up on his fav NFL team gear. I thought about experiences but there's no sporting events in our area to go to (looked at NCAA tourney but those aren't in our state this year), no exciting concerts (we already have tix for Justin Timberlake). I thought about a cooking class but you have to buy into the specific class on the specific date and it's super hard to plan ahead against DDs weekend sports schedules.

Anything you can think of that fun or unique? Was considering a monthly sock subscription or coffee subscription, but beyond that I've got nothing.

Does he already have to COleman Quad LED lantern? That was a hit. A nice folding knife (Buck knife or similar)?

Any chance you could gift him a date overnight away with you? My DH would appreciate that more than most things since we don't get the chance often and are usually rushing back for a sitter. You could do the planning and surprise him with the details if that would make it more special.

If you do the cooking class thing you could gift him a certificate for it and then schedule closer to when you know your schedule.

Yes to both. We were early adopters of the Coleman Quad lantern and it gets regular use. Love that thing. Hunting knife/multipurpose gutting thing was last year's gift.

Definitely spendy, but I had a custom action figure made of my husband a few years back (Yikes! It was a lot cheaper when I had it made). You can actually see my husband's figure on her etsy page. He is the one with the Dalek t-shirt and coffee cup (last photo). It was a huge hit.

Cooking/gadgets... does he have that internal meat temp reader thing for meats? (Clearly, I should be in marketing as I have such a way with words for describing things.)

Any MLB events close enough you could buy tickets to give and turn into a fun couples' getaway?

a gift card to a cooking class that he can sign up for at a later time

Thermoworks is a really good source for high quality "meat temp reader things" and lots of other goodies!

I gave my family one of these several years ago, and it’s gotten constant use and worked well:
https://www.thermoworks.com/ChefAlarm

There are fancier ones for avid grillers, like this:
https://www.thermoworks.com/Smoke

Or this:
https://www.thermoworks.com/ThermaQ-Meathead-Kit

As you can tell, I’m a big fan of Thermoworks gadgets. I’ve used a Thermapen for many years to measure the temp of bread dough, and their Extra Big and Loud Timer is great if you want a timer that keeps reminding you until you shut it off!

I bought my husband the Thermoworks Smoke for his birthday this year. He was pretty excited about it.

My hori hori gardening knife is probably one of my most and longest used gifts, love it! I always carry it around the yard... used for planting (to dig smaller holes, saw out ground roots in the way and loosen roots of new plants) weeding, slug killing etc. :barf::innocent:

Why not schedule a cooking class? If there's a sport conflict, ask for ride help. It's ok to maybe miss one Saturday of kid stuff. :) They often have weeknight cooking classes though so you don't necessarily have any Saturday conflicts. Dh and I have done a few and they are really fun.

Are there any neat over 21 events at a local museum? Concerts? Even something you aren't sure he'll like- it can be a talking point, "wow, remember how awful hat band was??" ;)

I agree with the night (or weekend) away though. It's really nice to be on your own schedule and relax.

I saw this on Twitter the other day, Hunt Vault, it is like Stitch Fix for hunters. I am tempted to give it to DH at some point this year, probably his birthday in September. Our anniversary is this Thursday (so that and VD are 6 days apart) and DH needs new button down shirts so he is getting those.

This looks cool so I bought one.

We already have a multifunction cooker (not instapot...ours predates instapot) and a digital wireless thermometer for the grill.

I'll keep looking into cooking classes. We live in the middle of nowhere and I only know of one culinary school that's about 40mins from us.

What is your price range? My DH likes practical/non-extravagant gifts...he HATES spending money. (So not fun...grrr!!)

Does he have a favorite book from a while ago?? My DH was just reminiscing last night about a favorite book series that he read back in high school/college years. I am thinking of buying him the series for his bday...it also sounds like something that my kids would like.

Fun socks/underwear by Stance? I bought DS some awesome Monster Party socks by Stance for his birthday...he loved them. A fun gift from your girls... Stance has lots of fun themes...several Star Wars characters, Seinfeld (Festivus!!), the Michael Jackson Thriller pair is fun, etc.

I think a cooking class would be awesome!!

I love giving these as gifts. I just wore my Thriller pair a few days ago and they made me smile.

What about theater tickets? Is the Hamilton tour headed your way any time soon? Worth every penny!

No Whole Foods here yet...a town about 35mins away was supposed to get one years ago but plans keep getting held up with site and traffic impact studies.

Oh I'll have to check out Stance...new to me.

So Hamilton tix have been on MY bday/xmas list for 2 years now. NYC is 7hr away and of course tix are hard to come by. It is touring here but not until 2019 and tix not on sale yet. Theater is more my thing than his...but he's happy to accompany me.

Would it be wrong for me to give him a dog for his birthday. I mean, it's on my bday list (which is 2 days before his) and I know hell will freeze over first, so it would be a gift that would keep on giving to me at least. LOL, I kid, I kid, I wouldn't actually do that.
