Bravo for them, I say. The law basically states parents can't be charged or investigated by CPS for doing things like letting kids play outside, walk to school etc, barring evidence of neglect. (I was surprised to read in the walking home from the school bus thread a couple of weeks ago that some schools wouldn't let kids as old as fourth grade walk home.) I've definitely thought "I hope no one calls CPS" when I give my kids some independence.

My DH had been really skittish about letting DS (8) play in the front yard. His point was that DS was alone (only child, no neighbor kids), so he said he was an easy target. I can see that - I do think there is something to safety in numbers. He finally relented in the past few months. He put up a basketball goal in the driveway, so DS plays out there all the time. We do check if we don't hear the goal clanking. I have started leaving him alone in the car when I run into stores or restaurants. I wonder where that falls under the Utah law?

That's great. We're about 1.5 blocks away from the side entrance of the school. They have to cross the road one time, no guard there. My 4th grader is begging me to let her walk with her 1st grade sister but I'm reluctant. There's few kids around us but everyone walks with an adult.

This is soooooo necessary!!! I hope the legislation spreads to other states! It’s so hard, because the interpretation is still so subjective, and racism, socio-economic bias and the like are still going to come into play, I’m sure.
