I need to do a closet overhaul. Between purging when we remodeled last year, clothes wearing out and me losing weight, I need pretty much everything, shoes as well. The shopping will be spread out over the next several months, and I’m hoping to lose about 10lbs more as well.

I work in a school, so work clothes can also be worn on weekends.

What do you consider essentials in your closet?

Thanks

Has your weight been fluctuating a lot? If so, maybe, at least for a bit, think of clothes that have some size leeway like leggings/ jeggings, wrap dresses, shirt dresses, basically bottoms with elastic and shirts with a bit of spandex or stretch.

I’ve been losing about 0.5-1 lb a week, and I hope to lose about 10 lbs more between now and Christmas.

That’s a good idea to look with things that are stretchy so I can continue to wear as lose weight.

I’m also wanting to plan ahead on what to buy when I get to size I want to maintain, so I can buy things as find them. I’ve never had a wardrobe that covers possible events, so had to scramble to buy something. Or shoes didn’t quite work with an outfit.

I’m interested in hearing from others what the they think is essential in their closet.

Good jacket/blazers. They can really complete an outfit. Nice jeans. I like Kut from the Cloth. I used to really like Lucky Brand, but now they seem kind of meh to me. Also, patterned tops. They add interest to your whole look. I know some people only wear plain tees, but I like having a little pizzaz.

I am very casual when I'm not at work, so mine may not match up well with others, but I'll take a stab at it.

For work: 2-3 pair machine washable neutral dress pants, several cardigans or casual jackets + tanks to wear underneath, a few sweaters, 1-2 suits

For things I have to dress up for: approximately knee length black skirt, 1 funeral appropriate dress that can also be worn to other things, 1 cocktail dress, 1 more casual dress

For evenings/weekends: 3 pair jeans, 1-2 capris, 2-3 shorts, long and short sleeved t-shirts, 2-3 hoodies

Other: minimum 4 good fitting bras, 1-2 sports bras, a couple of sets of workout clothes, summer and winter pajama pants, 10+ underwear & socks

I aim for doing laundry every weekend, but that doesn't always happen, so I like to have enough of everything to make it 1.5-2 weeks without washing.

I can get dressed for a variety of occasions easily from my closet. I have a lot of clothes. [emoji6]
Things I’m glad I have:
Fun skirts- I especially like my knee length sequin pencil skirt (killer deal and it’s come in handy a number of times)
Black form fitting sweater and a camel colored one
Fun tops from Anthropologie. I only have 2-3 but they are great for date nights/ out with friends. Usually paired with dark jeans
A few wrap dresses
A shirt dress
3-4 summer dresses that I really like
Black jeans
Athleta casual pants
A few cozy sweaters
Democracy jeggings Nordstrom Rack
1 pair straight jeans
1 pair bootcuts
Short sleeve pull over blouses- Nordstrom Rack is great for these
Wrap blouse in a stretchy fabric
Some cardigans
I probably have 3 cocktail dresses I could throw on at moments notice
ETA- I have a few work appropriate dresses, several work appropriate skirts (pencil and a-line) and 2 great pairs of trousers.

Shoes- tall brown boots, brown booties, black heeled booties, black heels (a few varieties), nude heels, cute tennis shoes, a few pairs of ballet flats and slip on Sketchers.

OT (sorry for the highjack!) - When you have time, would you mind linking to clothes from Nordstrom Rack? I buy jeans there but I’m always so overwhelmed by all the racks of miscellaneous clothing. I’ve found that ordering from them online works well but I don’t love things once I try them on. I’m a 6P and carry my weight in my belly. I look pregnant even though my baby is 8.5!

Gymnbomb and SnuggleBuggles, thanks for the list. That’s what I’m looking for. Typically, I’ve just gotten what fitted but then I didn’t have something when needed. I want to put more thought into purchases this time around.

I’m going to have to wait to get somethings, but meanwhile I can fill in shoes and some shirts - I carry weight in bottom half so typically my shirts fit regardless of weight. I may need to get a pair of jeans as current ones are getting big, but I’ll look for sales on anything I think I won’t wear for too long. If the weather stays warm, I won’t be wearing jeans until closer to Thanksgiving anyways.

FYI Kohls has some cute dresses that might be nice to just add to your closet. They could all get you through a variety of occasions with the right accessories.

I really like Get Your Pretty On Style Challenges, but the Fall Challenge just closed. I should have posted here, but I didn't think about it! She has some fun free resources on the blog (plus instagram) and I have heard that her closet staples guide is great too and I believe it's open all year. Here's a link for the closet staples guide: https://getyourprettyon.com/product/closet-staples-capsule-wardrobe/ (https://vm235.isrefer.com/go/STAPLES/leahprescott)
The pieces I personally have purchased this season are burgandy and camel jogger pants, casual soft hoodie style jean jacket, burgandy flutter sleeve top, floral cross over tank, puffy vest, olive utility jacket, black and white plaid shirt, teal blouse, black flats. Still thinking about a handful of other items but I'm almost happy with it!

I would definitely consider finding a capsule wardrobe from a blogger you like and build from there. They’ll list pieces and then outfits that can be made from those pieces. Like PP suggested, I also like Get Your Pretty On.

Thanks, Snugglebuggles, for the shirt links! I need to get some of those for work and church!
I also like GYPO and her jewelry line, Audrey and Alison (or Alison and Audrey)?
Another good one is Putting me together. She has great stuff, and a lot of awesome free info. on her blog. She does really reasonable capsule wardrobes- $15 a season, I think?
I also look at Sheaffer told me to, but she mostly just lists cute clothes, shoes, bags, jewelry that she gets. Outfit combos, but not really capsule wardrobe lists.
I'll be watching this thread... I need to up my wardrobe game from SAHM to teacher clothes... realizing that all of my colored jeans are cute but not quite as dressy as everyone else on staff wears. :). Since it's my first year there, I need to look more professional. I've bought a bunch of cardigans, as my classroom temperature varies a ton.

Some basics/ classics that I like:
*denim long-sleeved button-down shirt (roll up the sleeves to 3/4 length)
*cream or white and navy or black striped shirt
*olive green utility vest and/or jacket for fall and spring
*blush colored shirt
*black pants; white, olive, grey, Burgundy, blush, dark blue jeans
*jean jacket (light wash, dark wash, possibly medium wash, possibly white if they're distressed and young enough looking)- Kut from the Kloth is a good brand, I think
*Black sleeveless dress
*Denim shirt dress
*Something in leopard print (I have an infinity scarf from ON from a few years ago)
*putty colored booties
*black cardigan... I bought a few from A New Day at Target this summer/ fall that are good (they have a cute mustard color one and a rust-color one that are great for fall if they work with your hair and skin color)
*black joggers from Athleta
*black vest- can do twill fabric- check Amazon, I got an olive green one there with a hood and drawstrings at waist, or quilted (I got mine last fall from ON and wear it a ton- love the gold zipper), or puffy (like North Face or Patagonia- check Nordstrom Rack or 6pm.com). I also have a quilted olive green, and quilted navy blue, vest from ON last fall. Lots of ways to mix and match them with denim or flannel shirts, etc.

Some of my favorite stores: Loft (you can get an additional 15% off for being a teacher), Old Navy, Target (I like the A New Day and the other line that reminds me of Madewell, can't remember the name), Madewell, JCrew Factory, Nordstrom, Gap...

That's all I can think of right now!

For me my top 3 essentials are:

Knit (or stretchy) blazer or structured cardigan. You may want machine washable for school. Budget: I have a few (Caslon brand) as well as my MM.LaFleur jardigan (splurge)
Skinny stretch pants - stretch ponte is a good fabric. Budget: Mine are from Athleta and are great. And then I have a couple of skinny pants from MM.LaFleur (splurge)
Wrap or shirtdress, whatever you feel most comfy in. I have a JCrew knit shirtdress (budget) and an MM.LaFleur shirtdress (splurge).

And if we're talking shoes, I LOVE MY ROTHY'S.

Most of them I bought used, but I will link what I can:
Burgundy and camel joggers are old navy. I bought mine on Ebay but they look very similar to the current style here. (https://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/product.do?vid=1&pid=339350002&searchText=joggers)I kind of want the olive ones too!
Jean jacket is this one, I found it at the thrift store for $1 and I love it, so comfy! (https://poshmark.com/listing/Jean-denim-life-in-progress-hooded-jacket-Medium-56af9110729a66fd6a017ad7?ad_partner=google&campaign_id=1476141348&enable_guest_buy_flow=true&gclid=Cj0KCQjwlqLdBRCKARIsAPxTGaVSj6wkJ_IslEwMF28U HOdsnupzPjOBpMELgJ57oka_Grd8UjX84mEaAmo4EALw_wcB&gdm_bottom=false&l_con=PREOWNED%2FUSED&utm_campaign=1476141348&utm_source=gdm)
Flutter sleeve top from Target (https://www.target.com/p/women-s-short-flutter-sleeve-blouse-a-new-day-153/-/A-53724225?preselect=53545508#lnk=sametab) It's more burgundy than red IRL.
Floral Cross Over Tank (https://www.target.com/p/women-s-floral-print-v-neck-tank-a-new-day-153-olive/-/A-53642812?preselect=53423888#lnk=sametab)....really love this and it was on sale for $12.98.
Vest from Costco (https://www.costco.com/32-Degrees-Ladies'-Packable-Vest.product.100397978.html), my store had them on clearance for $10
Olive Utility Jacket was last year's H&M I bought it from ebay, can't find a link
Black & White plaid shirt used from Clothes Mentor but it's just a basic plaid button up from ON
Teal Blouse (https://www.ebay.com/itm/Lush-Nordstrom-XS-Blouse-Teal-Split-Neck-3-4-Sleeve-High-Low-Career-Blue-Green/283139056178?_trkparms=aid%3D555017%26algo%3DPL.CA SSINI%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20150817211709%26meid%3De16 27eeb652442e8ae2cee1eb7e64c67%26pid%3D100506%26rk% 3D1%26rkt%3D1%26%26itm%3D283139056178&_trksid=p2045573.c100506.m3226), from Clothes Mentor but from the Rack I think.
Black flats are super simple Dr. Scholl's.

Am seriously considering these (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0762TSWT9/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?smid=A2L77EE7U53NWQ&th=1) because my feet are soooo picky.

Yes! For the seasonal challenge you get a list (plus links to suggested items at various price points) and then a whole bunch of outfits (I think this year it's 25) mixing up the pieces. Plus you get to join the Facebook group which is super fun for folks to share outfits, more re-mix ideas, links, suggestions, etc. It's great because you can ask questions and opinions about pieces, accessories, colors, etc. There isn't a facebook group for closet staples though. I like how she does build upon previous challenges so there is a lot of overlap (you don't have to buy all new stuff).

Like pp mentioned, I also love the Putting Me Together Blog but haven't done her challenges. Love her style!

Thanks... I poked around on the blog and saw how she showcased others wearing a certain look. Some I can wear to work by swapping out pants or shoes. I’m pretty casual as I spend lots of time on the floor or chasing after little kids. I try to be a little dressier for meetings. I can see it saving money by not buying things I don’t wear much.

I'm so glad for this thread! I came here looking for inspiration just like this tonight, and found all these great ideas.

What other bloggers do y'all like? I'd like to start following some so I can get a feel for where/how to update my look. I'm very short and petite, and it'd be nice to find some who are close to my size. I need serious help and handholding in the clothing (and hair and makeup) department, because it just does not come naturally to me at all. :)

Yes. She does do a deal for the entire year that I believe is available around the holidays. I'm not sure I will join for winter because with my southern temps the Fall Capsule might be all I will wear all cold season but then I would miss the fun of the Facebook group so I'm not sure. I might think about getting the annual subscription depending on the price.

There’s a $10 coupon code for Getting your Pretty On, so I got the closet basics wardrobe style challenge. Some things I have, but there’s several items I’m missing. I’ll start to fill in the holes. I’m hoping to keep losing weight, so I’ll be careful with what I get.

It’s a casual capsule so all the pants are jeans, but I can sub in a different pant that’s the same color for work. It doesn’t have dressy occasions, so I’ll need the lists you posted to cover other functions. Between the 2, I can start to pull my closet together.

I looked at the options she posted, searched for things at my favorite stores, and pinned them to a Pinterest board. I ordered some things for fall and winter, but others I’ll spread out. Waiting for holiday sales. I agree with the “shopping with purpose” saying on the website. I was tempted to get a different top, but didn’t as need it to coordinate with a cardigan.
