DD has been asking for a skateboard off and on for a while. I have kind of blown it off, because they make me nervous. The other day she rode one for the first time at our neighbor's house and actually did pretty well. Now she is really asking for one. Her birthday and Christmas are both in December and we don't have many ideas as to what to get her, so we are thinking about getting her a skateboard. But, I am completely clueless. Any recommendations for one that is stable and what safety equipment would you require. A helmet obviously, but what else? TIA!

I'd say helmet, and then *maybe* wrist braces, or whatever they're called. I got reprimanded by the Doctor when my DD broke her wrist rollerblading. As to specific type of boards, I think Penny Boards are popular these days.

DD1 fell in love with skateboarding at a friend's house and immediately wanted one. I held off for a month or so and then decided to go ahead. Her friend has a long board, reg old style wooden one and a small inexpensive plastic one and that was the one dd2 liked best. We went with this one as the reviews seemed decent, it was inexpensive and most importantly Pink! https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075S1CVXK

I require full gear just like rollerblading: Helmet, wrist, knee and elbow pads. I really should probably require a mouth guard of some sort but that seems like overkill.

My youngest (just turned 11) is super into skateboarding. He started out with a long board (more stable, but not for tricks) and then added a penny board and a regular skateboard. I think he was around your DDs age when he got the longboard and he was almost immediately really comfortable on it. I originally required pads - elbow and knee, wrist guards and helmet but we pretty quickly went to just helmet.

As for brands - I cannot remember since we've had them all for about three years, but other than the penny board I was surprised how pricey they could get. I think his longboard was over $100 but it has held up really well to a lot of use. The skateboard was less - maybe $75. Penny board even cheaper.

DD2 (very petite 13 year old--looks 10 years old) has a Landyachtz 35 Chill Bird. I think it's this one: http://landyachtz.com/boards/cruisers/battle-axe-35-chill-bird

She really likes it a lot so far, and the long board was definitely cheaper on Amazon and not full retail price.

She also has these:

Following! Both kids went to skate camp this summer and want skateboards for the holidays. We have knee pads, elbow pads and helmets, and I was planning to take them to a local bike/skate shop to get boards. Probably more $$ than online but worth it to shop local and let them pick. I am pretty terrified too, but I figure they could practice at the school yard or bike path.

DS (11) took a 1-hour lesson at a local skate park and did really well! He was using an old Alien Workshop regular skateboard that worked well. We also had a new Penny Board with us and the instructor told us that the regular skateboards work much better for learning.
