View Full Version : What time does your FIRST GRADER (or young elementary schooler) go to sleep /wake up?

The other thread about fifth graders was so helpful that I'm starting a new one about younger elementary school kids.

DD2 is in first grade. She never wants to go to bed and starts flying off the walls (almost literally) around bedtime. I sometimes give her melatonin now, out of desperation. On a good night, I get her to bed by 8:30 pm, but she doesn't fall asleep until 9.

I wake her up at 8 am in the morning.

So 11 hours, which seems ok, but I'm literally peeling her out of bed...

What time to do you get your first grader (or another young elementary school grader) to sleep?
And what time do you have him/her wake up?

My 1st grader is asleep at 7:20- my 3rd grader 7:30- they wake naturally at 6 which is exactly when they need to be up for school.

My oldest was getting into bed at 7 during his Kindergarten and 1st grade. He had the freedom to read quietly in bed or/and chat with me before lights out by 7:30. He absolutely needed it then, as he’s a kid that requires a lot of sleep.

This year, in 2nd grade he goes up 7:30 for his shower and reading routine. Lights out by 8pm. He gets up anywhere 7:30 to 8am by himself most mornings and so far it’s working for him. It just wasn’t possible to have earlier bedtimes with all of his sports and ccd activities this year.

Varies - DD! (2nd grade) went through a spell last year that she would be silly, play until 9-915 before conking out. Generally it is 8-830 to bed. Usually will wake around 7am - sometimes will sleep later. A couple of times I have had to wake her at 745.

School starts drop off at 845 and bell at 915 so late wakeups aren't a problem.

I recall the recommendation is 9-11hours of course can vary depending on the kid's needs.

Almost sounds as if she is overtired?

DD is up between 5:30-6:30 regardless what time she goes to sleep. I aim for a bedtime between 7-8 because she is a bear without enough sleep.

My first grader is in bed by 8 and falls asleep easily. Up by 5:30 or 6 usually. I don’t wake him, he wakes by himself.

The Biscuit is in first grade. At his request over the summer, we bumped bedtime (lights out, head on pillows) back to 8:30 pm and we wake him at 7:00 am if he does not get up himself. We try to be out the door between 7:45 and 7:50 a.m. We reserve our rights to put him down early if he clearly is tired or not feeling great.

Kinder to third grade - upstairs at 7:00 reading till lights out at 7:30. Up on their own by 6:00. If we keep them up late, they still wake at 6:00 but I get the pleasure of their grumpiness!

My pre-K kid (5) and second grader (7) go to their room around 8. They often don't fall asleep until close to 10. I have tried earlier bedtimes. Did not work for them. My 7 year old wakes up herself between 7 and 8. My 5 year old wakes up on her own 50% of the time.

My kids are often in good spirits so I don't think they need a lot more sleep.

DD (1st grade) and DS (3rd) go to bed at either 7:45 or 8, depending on if they ride the bus to school or if I drive them. They get up at 6:30 to leave the house by 7:10-7:15 or bus mornings, or up at 7 to leave around 7:45 if I drive. DS (the 3rd grader) doesn’t always go right to sleep, but he gets lights out at the same time as DD. He may lay in his bed for a bit or get up and get extra water or whatever, but he is almost always asleep by 8:30.

The only exception to this bedtime is Monday nights when they have Cub Scouts until 8. Then they are in bed as quickly as I can get them there, which is usually 9. Weekends they go to bed by 8 unless we are doing something special, and wake up on their own usually by 7, but rarely any later than 7:30.

9pm is lights out for my first grader - but she doesn't wake up til 8 or a little after, so it works for her! With her ballet classes and her siblings activities, an earlier bedtime isn't very realistic for her. My older kids were in the 8-8:30 range at this age.

My youngest DS goes to bed at 8pm and I have to get him up at 5:30 for school. On weekends he usually sleeps in until 6:30ish.

1st grader, DD, goes to bed pretty much the same time as DS, the 4th grader! DD has always been a TERRIBLE sleeper, but melatonin has changed all our lives. Bedtime is 8-8:30pm, (we aim for 8, but sometimes we’re not done until 8:30) and she used to be up after that until past 9:30pm every night, but now she sacks out well before 9pm. Tonight, for example, it’s 7:58pm, and both kids are in bed with lights out. DS is reading on a kindle. DD is falling asleep. They wake by themselves in the morning before 7am, which is when my alarm rings.

DS is 5 and in K. Bedtime is 7:30 but he chats to himself and generally does whatever it takes to not fall asleep. He's usually asleep around 9-9:30? He used to reliably be up by 7 but now sometimes he will sleep a bit later and I get him up at 7:30 on those mornings. He's never been much of a sleeper. By one month old he was regularly awake 6-9 hours straight during the day, happily refusing to nap. He didn't sleep through the night until after age 2. We still believe in sending him to bed early though :wink2:

My 6.5 yo goes to bed at 7:30. Ideally he should be in bed at 7:15 because that's his natural fall asleep time. He'll wake up between 5:30 & 6:30 on his own depending on when he went to bed. The earlier he goes to bed, the quicker he falls asleep and the longer he sleeps. If your DD is getting wild at bedtime, that usually means they are overtired and need to be asleep earlier. Go to bed too tired makes mine take longer to fall asleep. It happens all of the time with my kids!

Last year (in 1st) DC was asleep by 8pm and up by 6am. This year asleep around 9:30pm and up about 7:30pm- it’s nuts! Trying to move bedtime earlier but DC just won’t fall asleep before then.

We aim for 8:30 for my 1st and 4th graders. Sometimes it becomes 9, which I don’t really like but can’t always be helped due to activities, extra homework/projects/etc. My 1st grader usually wakes up on his own by 7:30, which is when I’d like for them all to be up. But I typically have to drag my 4th graders out of bed. He’s always been an early riser and easy to wake, they’ve always had trouble getting up in the mornings. He ask never sleeps in on the weekends but they almost always do.

I have a K and 3rd grader. Both kids have always been good sleepers, but DS, my oldest, stays up later and later, it seems. We go upstairs to bed around 7:30-45. DD is asleep by 8-8:15 the latest, right as her head hits the pillow. DS stays up and reads until at least 9pm. I try and get him to have lights out earlier but he just isn't tired. It's my fault - DD is like DH and DS is like me. I stay up way too late. This year we are out the door at 7:15, so I wake them at 6:25. DS is usually annoyed but oh well.

6yo, 1st grade. Upstairs by 8, but usually doesn’t fall asleep until 9 . She needs to be up by 8 but usually up by 7:30. It’s not enough sleep for her.

It starts at 8 but DH takes them on the way to work and they are there at the earliest drop off time- 7:30.

We also do spelling and other homework before school- it works so much better for us than trying to do it when their brains and bodies are fried from sitting all day.

DD is in 1st and goes down between 8 and 8:30. She wakes around 6:15-6:30 the latest. Bus arrives at 7:15.

And what time do you have him/her wake up?

My 7 year old second grader goes to bed by 8:30p (I've been trying to push this back to 8) and wakes up at 5:45am. (Her bus comes at 6:30p) She seems to do fine with this schedule.

My 1st grader goes to bed by 8:00. He would be well served going to bed before that and sometimes he does. DH doesn’t get home until 7:00 though so it’s hard. He pretty much always is awake before 7 which is the wake time for the younger kids. He needs more sleep than any of my other kids and if he gets to bed late we feel it forever!

DS2 is a young 2nd grader, lights out by 7:30, he is up usually around 7 or 7:30am. Unfortunately twice a week he needs to be up by 6:30am at the latest, and that process is horribly painful. He used to wake up by 6am it earlier on his own, so maybe we need to move his bedtime back...

7-7:30 at the latest and wakes between 5:45-6:15. His natural rhythm is to wake early so he needs the early bedtime to get enough rest.

I'm so lax :)

My 2nd grader goes to bed at 9 with his brother (11). They get 10-15 minutes to read, but I know they chit chat longer than they should (despite having their own rooms, they prefer to sleep in the same room). They start school at 8:15, get up around 7, although he frequently gets up at 6:30/6:45 and climbs in to snuggle for a bit.
