Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I want to get my Dad who is elderly, some kind of kitchen sponge/ scrubber that doesn't collect a lot of germs/ bacteria. He uses a brush right now and it is usually full of gunk. I still use the old disposable sponges that you replace every few weeks. Is there anything newer on the market that can easily be thrown in dishwasher to clean and doesn't have any yucky chemicals in it? TIA

I just buy the cheap sponges with scrubbers on one side (the 6 for a dollar kind at Dollar Tree) and replace them frequently. At that price you can use a brand new one every week!

Paper towels are my guilty indulgence.

I use dish cloths and change them every day. I was them when my bucket is full but lots of people just throw them in the washer and wash with the next load.

I use either those or the plain scrubbers only from DT and cut them in half and try to get rid of them weekly - several times a month for sure. In between, if they're not too icky I put them in the dishwasher. To be honest, I rarely do dishes by hand - I just dont think they get as clean but if I do I often just grab a new one

I use a silicone scrubber like this Kuhn Rikon Stay Clean Silicone Scrubber, Green https://www.amazon.com/dp/B019PYOAB6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_7iY9Bb1VWPKRF to wash my makeup brushes. It works good for brushes, not sure about scrubbing pots and pans.

The reviews on Amazon are all over the place, but I personally have never had problems. I buy a package of replacement brushes every Christmas (because I also get some for my mom's stocking). Occasionally, I take the brush off and put in the dish washer. If it gets worn, I replace the brush. I also like the hand-held version and have the plastic version (instead of stanless steal handle) in our laundry room.

For sponges, we use the Scotch Brite ones from Costco that pp linked above. I chuck them fairly regularly.

For scrubbing pots and pans, I grab these $2 scrub brushes from IKEA. I do put these on the top rack of the dishwasher to clean after I’ve used it, and it emerges like new. Replace as needed.

It must be our generation that is super preoccupied with dish sponges, cause I’m always eyeing them at parents or my grandparents home. I will toss and replace and apologize later if they are beyond suspect. Sorry but not sorry. Lol.

I use the exact same one and have never had a problem. I also take the brush head off and put in the dishwasher and replace whenever it's worn.

I also use these sponge wands for things that need to be cleaned gently. I replace it once a month.

I use the ones similar to the Costco ones. I think they are called the Scrunge or something like that. I just buy them at the supermarket and put them in the microwave for 2 mins or occasionally put them in the dishwasher. They are pretty cheap too, so replacing them frequently is not that bad.

I use a combo of dishcloths (replaced multiple times a day, usually - I have a huge stash of both dishtowels and dishcloths so they can be replaced frequently), small scrub brushes (dishwasher daily) and occasionally a scrubdaddy sponge for stuff that won't come off another way (dishwasher when used)

I haven't seen my favorite tool yet. I've used dish cloths, grew up using sponges (hate them now), and have tried the longer scrubbers that hold soap. Out of them all, I prefer the cheap small brushes from Target. I think they're under $2. I do throw them in the dishwasher but it does distort the brushes. They are so inexpensive that I don't mind buying a new one every so often.

I used the Scrub Daddy at my IL's this weekend and was impressed with it. And, like pp said, no gross smell! (that's why I refuse to use sponges- they smell absolutely awful to me).

I use the Oxo round scrub brushes with soap in the rubbery top. They are lovely!

I've used Scotch-Brite Dobie sponges forever. They're what my mom bought when I was growing up.

I use a combo of dishcloths, Skoy Scrubs (http://https://www.amazon.com/Skoy-B00BJCV6JC-Scrub-2-pack/dp/B00BJCV6JC/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1543289545&sr=8-1&keywords=skoy+scrub) for stuck stuff, and a brush (http://https://www.amazon.com/Philips-AVENT-Free-Bottle-Brush/dp/B0009ET49K) for really oily pans (because I don't like getting my cloths all oily).

I also use the costco scotch brite yellow and green sponges - microwave daily, replace frequently. I hate the waste of it but have never found anything I like better. I read an article that suggested these washable, reusable fabric sponges but I can't help but think they'd get gross . https://www.marleysmonsters.com/products/reusable-sponge

I've also heard good things about the silicone sponges like these https://www.target.com/p/as-seen-on-tv-3pk-textured-silicone-sponges/-/A-52786151?ref=tgt_adv_XS000000&AFID=google_pla_df&fndsrc=tgtao&CPNG=PLA_Kitchen_Priority%2BShopping&adgroup=Kitchen_Priority+TCINs&LID=700000001170770pgs&network=g&device=c&location=9028890&gclsrc=aw.ds&ds_rl=1246978&ds_rl=1247068&ds_rl=1246978&ref=tgt_adv_XS000000&AFID=google_pla_df&CPNG=PLA_Kitchen_Priority+Shopping&adgroup=Kitchen_Priority%20TCINs&LID=700000001170770pgs&network=g&device=c&location=9028890&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIs47V3fHz3gIVm7rACh0fsQgcEAQYBSAB EgIVhPD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds but apparently dollar tree sells something similar?

We use the standard blue sponges with the scrubber on one side and some nylon dish scrubbers that my husband’s cousin crochets and sells. I just did a quick search for homemade dish scrubber and there are tons like them on Etsy and patterns available too. We throw them in the dishwasher and they look brand new.

We use Dobie as well. Toss in dishwasher weekly, replace monthly or so. Work great

I use the costco yellow sponges with the green scrubber side. The bag has like 30 in it, so it lasts forever. I throw them away probably every 2 weeks, or whenever they look less bright and used. I wash dishes every day - egg pans, dinner pans, cooking utensils - those don't go in the dishwasher. We use cloth towels for drying.

IKEA scrubber brush. I buy a pile of them every year and replace when needed. Nice bright colors!
