My mom is almost 80. She goes walking just about everyday for exercise. Lately she's been talking about wanting a pedometer. She is super low tech, so no fit bit etc for her. What would type/brand would you suggest? I started looking at Amazon, they have a million choices and I'm starting to suspect Amazing glowing reviews ( I suspect some of them are paid or bots). I don't want to buy something cheap that will break right away. TIA!

Honestly, I used old pedometers and always had a hard time setting them and getting accurate readings. I would look for a deal on Monday for the most basic Fitbit. I scored one for DS1 a couple of years ago for $35. I’m guessing the pedometer will run you at least $20. Once it’s set up to her computer she doesn’t have to fiddle with it at all.

ETA - my almost 80 yo MIL has one and loves it.

I agree that a basic Fitbit, especially on a good sale, would be a good choice. Like jgenie, my experience with the old pedometers wasn’t great. In addition, most of those needed to clip on a belt or pocket and were easy to lose or awkward to wear. The wristband/wristwatch styles are much more practical. At my CCRC, many folks wear these, so they’re clearly popular with the older crowd! (I have a Versa, which would be overkill for OP's needs, and some of my friends have Apple watches...)

My dad is 73 & super low tech. He LOVES his fitbit. My sil got it for him for his birthday and set up the app on his phone. He loves announcing how many steps, how long he slept, etc. His normal day is in th 20,000 step range.

Vivofit 4 my daughter has one. Waterproof because she swims. One year battery life. You can connect to your phone, but you don’t have to. Counts steps, gives time. $60

OP here, I suppose I should have said my mom is really "no tech". She prides herself on her flip phone (which she never turns on and never uses). She does not have a computer or tablet, and she has no interest in them. The only piece of tech she likes and owns is an Echo Dot.

I will look into the Vivo fit. $60 is more than I wanted to spend on this so any less $ options would be great.

This is the one I got for my dad, who has a cell phone but only takes it to church meetings and leaves it in the car. This Pedometer was strictly steps, and i believe it reset itself at midnight. My DH helped my dad set his stride, but then it just lived in his pocket. He likes knowing his total steps. I ended up buying a second one after a couple years, so it doesn't last forever, but other than that, no complaints. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007ZWIJR2/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Just curious—how does she use the Dot? I assume that you or someone set it up for her, since I’m not sure how the setup can be done without a computer or tablet or smartphone. But she does have WiFi? Does she use the WiFi for anything else?

When I had a basic pedometer like this, one problem was that I didn’t always have pockets (or big enough pockets) in everything.

My issue when I had one that lived in my pockets was that I would forget it was in there & throw it in the wash. :bag

I have a FitBit Charge 2. You can see steps on its screen without needing to use a smartphone or computer at all. My main screen shows the time, heart-rate and steps. (You could set it up so it doesn't have the other stuff to scroll through.)
