DS is going to need a suit in January. He is 6'2" and 170#, so definitely mens sizes. But we'd rather not spend a ton, since he won't wear it much and might not be done growing. Also, DH doesn't wear suits so we really have no idea where to look.

Any suggestions?

You can look at renting a suit from a place like Friar Tux. That's what we do since my boys are still growing.

Oh, that's a good idea. Looks like there are none of those stores in my town, but maybe there are others. He will need it at least 2 (and likely 3) times this school year, though, so maybe it would be worth buying one.

I bought DS1 a men's suit at Kohl's.

JC Penney, good prices esp when they have sales

We got one at Kohls. They were actually separates but they did the trick.

Men’s Warehouse usually has a buy one get one free special. For our son, they recommended buying the same suit in two sizes. This has been a great strategy for us as DS has recently needed the larger jacket with the smaller pants.

Kohls' Men's Warehouse Joseph Banks anyplace you see a big sale sign.

We bought our teen son one of the nicer quality suits from Jos. A Banks for at least 80% off last year. It has worked out well. I checked my history and I placed the order on January 10th. If there is a repeat sale, I hope to pick him up a few more items.

H&M--we got DS a nice looking suit for not much money.

J Crew. The more youthful cuts and not cheap but not pricey and decent quality.

We got one for my 14 year-old at Nordstrom Rack for $100. Had it altered in the store for $25 and it was ready the next day. If you have a Nordstrom card it “refunds” the cost of alterations with Nordstrom credit.

I looked into renting but it would have cost more and taken longer for alterations.

H&M would have been my next stop if we had struck out at Nordstrom Rack.

(just skip through the clown-colored ones at the beginning  )

I would find the best looking / fitting suit you can even if it meant spending a little more. I'm not talking custom tailored suit, but Nordstrom or Jos. A Banks would be my first two stops and I would hope for a good sale. If I were buying a suit for my freshman in high school, I would go the Kohls / Penny's route. But for an 18 year old, I would invest a little more. You already know 2-3 times he will need it this year, plus there may be a funeral or wedding that pops up, there could be internship interviews, college interviews, etc. At 18, I would want him to have something of better quality ready to go so he's not scrambling in the next few months any time a suit is needed. You can always buy the pants longer so you have more hemmed material to let down if need be.

I agree with the recs for Kohls or Men's Wearhouse. We've had good luck at both for DH for not a huge amount of money.

I have bought separates through Amazon and returned what didn't fit. I just bought a nice suit jacket for DS who is a thin 5'10" - I scrolled through and found some on sale, Calvin Klein and Tommy Hillifger, and ordered about 5. We kept one and returned the rest. I'm sure I could have found matching pants as well. This was definitely the easiest route for us, as DS hates shopping!

Update: DS and I went to Nordstrom Rack and Banana Republic Factory today to try on suits. Our Nordstrom Rack didn't have much we liked. At BR, we bought this suit (http://https://bananarepublicfactory.gapfactory.com/browse/product.do?pid=359413001&sdkw=standard-fit-stretch-grey-chalk-stripe-blazer-P359413&vid=1&sdReferer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bananarepublicfactory. com%2Fproducts%2Fmodern-suits-for-men.jsp) and got jacket and pants for $80 after discounts. Sweet deal, but I'm not completely convinced about standard fit (rather than slim fit) for someone his age. Slim fit seems more on trend. But honestly, the slim fit jackets looked weird on him - the lapels pooched out when they were buttoned - and the standard fit one looked OK. I haven't seen the pants yet but he says they were OK. This suit seems better made than those he tried on at N. Rack.

My DH is 6’ and 185lbs and even when he was 10lbs less in his late 20s and early 30s (he is 44 now) he needed an athletic cut jacket vs. a slim cut jacket so that could be part of the issue with the jacket. He is still skinny imho and can’t do slim cut anything because of his shoulders being broad. You wouldn’t think a skinny guy has this problem but he does. Glad you found something that fits. Banana Republic clothes tend to be very well made. I also agree with the JCrew, Jos. A. Banks, and Men’s Warehouse suggestions if you need more options. Dh has had dress clothes from each one of those stores over the years and has been happy with them.

I ordered the suit separates for DS from JC Penney’s a couple of weeks ago and was very pleased with the cut and fit. They had a sale and it was all pretty reasonable. Lots to chose from. I have one pair of pants to return, but the sizing was accurate.

I bought these with the matching jacket

That's great to hear. DS wanted another suit, so we bought another from JCPenney. DS is very happy with it. He's super tall and skinny, so he had good luck with their slim and extra slim suits. We did get both suits altered, pants hemmed and jacket taken in for nicer fit. The alterations made the suit perfect.

eta, the suits we bought are both JF Ferrar as well
