DS is almost 5 and likes mazes, tic tac to, letter code games, etc. I want to get him an activity book or preferably smaller activity pad for Christmas but everything I find seems aimed at older kids who can read well. He knows a few words, but is just getting started on sounding them out.

This book is so fun. I don't know if it's exactly what you're looking for, but it's really fun and educational.

I was hoping for something smaller to take on a plane trip, but i bet he would also love this. He is a fan of those books. I have added it to my amazon list for his birthday!

You could try invisible ink activity books. I remember loving them in the 80s and they are still around. I found a bundle of 6 small activity books on Amazon: Bingo, Tic-tac-toe, Hangman, Maze, Fleet (aka Battleship), and More Fleet. You could hold on to Hangman until he gets older but he should be able to do the rest.

We have a few Highlights books that work for that age group and Usborne has some great maze books. My kids also started to like the easier Extreme dot to dot books around then.

The dollar tree had some small activity pads with mazes and connect the dots. Sometimes Target dollar spot has them too
