I am looking for inexpensive, quiet fidget toys for my 5th grader to use in the classroom. Ideas?

A few years ago, I bought my DD1 a fidget pen that was recommended on here. She really liked it.

Can he chew gum or fiddle with Aaron’s Thinking Putty in the classroom?

Gum would be too noisy, lol. Putty may work well.

What is the pen like?

Dd uses silly putty, stress balls, and I just got her some of these

I buy a lot of squishy balls for my kids - they are usually about $3 or $4 but break within a couple of weeks if used a lot.

And slime - there are some fake-o Aarons ones from Target that are cheaper and bigger that we use.

Do you know what brand the slime/putty is from Target?

I just googled it and this girl youtuber is showing them here. Called Amazing Putty:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0WSh9dSFikk

I bought the unicorn one (slime changes different shades of purple with body warmth kneedling it) and the glow in the dark one. I thought they were both good. I want to say that they were... $5? So slightly more expensive than the small Aaron's slime, but also bigger amount.

Thank you! I’m not finding it on target’s site...I wonder if it’s still Available in store?

I’d be careful of sending slime to school to use as a fidget. That stuff stains and ruins textbooks, carpet, etc. It is strictly banned at my school. There are plenty of other quiet fidgets that could be used.

All fidgets are banned at DDs school and have been for 2 years. Real problem at our house, so DD did a science fair project on them and had resounding results that they improve test results. Principal still won't budge.

My DD likes Crazy Aaron's thinking putty (can't get enough) https://puttyworld.com/

Tangles (currently in the Target holiday stocking stuffer area) https://specialsupplies.com/tangle-junior-classic?_vsrefdom=adwords&gclid=CjwKCAiA0uLgBRABEiwAecFnk-FAt3xYK00_uSoQa04bOeXmJY-OHZ5i1acXEpMHc6OX1RfGFF8yQBoCzmgQAvD_BwE

It couldn't be a full ban - ie, banned even with IEPs or 504s?

In my kid's old school, I'm not certain of this, but I think that parents just got a doctor's note.

So true. My 10 year old left it on her bed before going to sleep - whoosh, all over everywhere, the sheets, the pillow cases, the bed spread. Going to have to throw it out (cleaning lady happened to be there next day before I could take sheets off and saw it and just washed it and just put it back on the bed, which is pretty funny because there are gobs of it still all over the place that you practically have to strategize to avoid if getting into the bed). Two days later, I found some on the rug. Absolutely can't get it off.

I was at a Target about two weeks ago and bought then, so hopefully there is some left.
Yes, I noticed it wasn't on the website when I looked.
It was good - just as good as Aaron's as far as I can tell.
The girl in that youtube video said 'laser' was her favorite. We didn't buy that one and I have no idea even what it does.

I like these (not necessarily this exact one, but ones I see in the store that are like this).

Yes it is a full ban. DD has an IEP that specifically lists fidgets. We've been unsuccessfully fighting it for over a year.

DC prefers Silly Putty as a fidget, but will use whatever is available, if needed. We do NOT like the fidget cubes at all. Otherwise, slap bracelets, slinkies, fidget spinners, Etsy has a bike chain fidget that is fun...

Check with school first, though; some allow them, some don't. However, they can be written into IEP's and 504's if applicable...

My Target has the putty, thanks again for the rec! They were on an endcap with a bunch of cheap toys/gadgets.

There were a lot of great ideas in ADDitude Magazine's list of stocking stuffers.

I ordered some from this site- they were recommended by a friend who works with tweens/teens with autism spectrum disorders. My kids and I both enjoy them and they are really quiet and not as distracting for others as some. Not exactly inexpensive, but they do have some sales/deals.

https://www.fidgetland.com/

And I can't believe that a principle could ban them fully! How short sighted! As a special ed teacher, I would have big issues with that. I'm sure his special ed and OTs do too!

ETA: Love Aaron's thinking putty too...again not cheap, but those mini tins aren't too bad and I find those contain enough and are easier to carry/store.

I’m pretty sure this is illegal. An IEP is a legally binding document. Perhaps an inquiry to the Office of Civil Rights is in order.

My favorite fidget is Mad Mattr. I buy the full-size (10 oz) bag and then put smaller (1-2oz) portions in a smaller tin or container to use as a fidget. It is like kinetic sand, but softer and it can be rolled, formed, stretched, squished, etc.

Other popular fidgets in my office: Tangles, a balancing bird although it might be distracting in a classroom https://www.amazon.com/Balancing-Bird-Dazzling-Toys-Colored/dp/B00HPA5FO4/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1545364581&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=balancing+bird&psc=1, putty (I swear I have them all; I had the target laser putty. It is a cook concept but the cheap laser light broke in 12 seconds. The magnetic one from Target was a thumbs down. All others have been cool), stretchy fidget toys that I often find in the Target dollar spot.

I have/have had other items in my office fidget box, but the above are the ones that have are the most durable and consistently get the most attention/use.
