10 yo DD is a voracious reader and I usually encourage using the library since we are overrun with books at this point, but want to get at least 1 set of books for her for Christmas. She loves all the Percy Jackson and Warrior series and I think has read them all (she also loved Harry Potter) - any similar type suggestions or other YA series you'd suggest? I'm scrolling through Amazon but it's hard to figure out what is great. TIA!

I can prob list a bunch more, but here are the top three that came to mind:

Atemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer (a movie adaptation will be coming out next year)
Septimus Heap by Angie Sage
Underland Chronicles by Suzanne Collins

You said you think she's read all of Percy Jackson, but does that include the other series by Riordan? (Kane Chronicles, Apollo, Magnus Chase, 39 Clues)

My 11 year old loves to read - especially series books.

Septimus Heap was a favorite I saw mentioned above.

Other series include:

Redwall
Wildwood Chronicles
Familiars

Not a series, but my DD raved about this book. She got all of her friends to read it.

If your DD likes graphic novels, the Amulet series is huge at the school library.

Has she read Wings of Fire? (My) Costco has a boxed set of books 1-8. My DS (14) likes Warriors and Wings of Fire. He hasn't tried Percy Jackson, so I don't know how that compares. My DD (10) also likes Wings of Fire and got the boxed set for Christmas last year.

I love these threads!

Land of Stories if she hasn't read them already - these are DD's favorite
The Sixty-Eight Rooms
The Mysterious Benedict Society
Masterminds
The Candymakers

Two other books that are (sadly) not series but were big hits recently - The Westing Game and Holes.

I am getting them Artemis Fowl, Anne of Green Gables, and Limony Snicket for Christmas this year ETA: and Wings of Fire. Luckily they like books as much as I do?

I’ve gotten a second hand recommendation for The Mysterious Benedict Society from another mom, and a 4th grade girl in my carpool today happened to rave about this series when we were discussing our favorite books.

I was just going to suggest Land of Stories- DD read the first one in a day (stayed up late to finish), and wanted the next two right away.

Thanks, PP, for the other suggestions- I have a 10 year old and am always looking for new (good quality book) recommendations!
You might try asking her teachers and media specialist what kids her age are into, as well as the children's librarians at your local library. Also tell them what topics she's interested (for my DD, it's fiction books with cats), and they can suggest some good ones. :)

I love this thread, OP.

My kid loved the Rick Riordan series too - Percy Jackson and then the other series he wrote. It felt like she was reading all of those books forever!
The librarian told me that Rick Riordan is now supporting other authors from different cultural backgrounds to write books (ie with Mayan, Egyptian, etc backgrounds). I don't know if any of those are out there.

Land of Stories. There are 6 books. I actually made it through one and a half and then got really tired of the same set up.

This is completely different, but 'The War That Saved Me' and the book written after it were amazing. We ended up fighting each other for each book as we were reading them. They come off looking like 'have to read' books so your kid may be negative upon first seeing them, but trust me, there is something so meaningful in those books. I thought of that character for a long long time after the books ended.

False Prince - and then there are two additional ones. We actually read this for a kid/adult book club. My kid couldn't stand it and didn't get through it - felt it was too scary. I actually REALLY liked it and stayed up almost all night for several nights finishing the series. The first is the best and REALLY interesting, taking weird twists and turns. But kind of violent for a fifth grader.

Spoiler alert to the Rick Riordan books for those whose kids have not read all the series! ******** This:

In one of the books, a very important character to my daughter died. She was heartbroken. It was like a real life person had died. She cried a lot and stayed awake ruminating about the death. And she was angry at Rick Riordan. We actually googled the character and a lot of other people were angry online, too! She was about to go away to sleep over camp and I was so incredible grateful that she read that before she left... but I did feel kind of sad that Rick Riordan gave my kid a dose of grieving, honestly. At the time, I kept thinking life is complicated and hard enough not to make my poor kid have to deal with this right now, even of a fiction character?

Thank you. I didn't know this and my DD and DS2 love this series. I pre-ordered it and will figure a way to make it a good surprise gift!

I have a 10 yr. old and 12 yr. old, both girls. Here are ones they have loved:

Percy Jackson books (Lightning Thief series and Heroes of Olympus series so far, we also own the Kane Chronicals)
The Land of Stories
Mysterious Benedict Society (we are reading the first one together currently)
the School for Good and Evil
Harry Potter
Sisters Club (3 books) by Megan McDonald
Septimus Heap series by Angie Sage
Little House on the Prairie series (I know, totally different for the books above, but they love Little House! Also have read the first few books in the Rose series).

DD2 asked for Goddess Girls books for Christmas, she has the first few and likes the mythology since she has also read Percy Jackson.

If she loves Percy Jackson, has she read any of the extra books? I gave DD1 Percy Jackson's Greek Heroes and Greek Gods for her birthday, she loves to use it for reference while reading the chapter books. We own Demigods and Magicians and one of the Ultimate Guides, so I got them some other similar books for Christmas. They have short stories, pictures, maps, etc., to enhance reading and understanding of the series.

Hunger Games
It's old, but the Dragon Riders of Pern series
Golden Compass Series
Chronicles of Narnia if she hasn't read them. (also I think the movies for those are very underrated)
A Wrinkle in Time and the other 3 books
Ursula Le Guin's books

Agreed about the Walden Media films, but I also liked the PBS miniseries versions. (Their adaptation of The Silver Chair has Tom Baker as Puddleglum, which delighted me to no end, as he's "my" Doctor Who.)

A Wrinkle in Time and the other 3 books
...

It might surprise you to know that there are 5 books in the series, referred to (and often sold!) as the Time Quintet.

In series chronology order, the books are:

A Wrinkle in Time
A Wind in the Door
Many Waters
A Swiftly Tilting Planet
An Acceptable Time

The final book was published in 1989 and is often shelved with the "teen" releases rather than "YA", so fans who'd read the existing books aren't always aware that it exists.

I LOVE Anne McCaffrey (Pern, Talent, Freedom series especially), but some families may find some of her ideas controversial. Just a heads-up in case that is important to those using these lists for ideas. Her series are not really "young adult" as most of the others mentioned are; they were written for adults.

Sorry, SnuggleBuggles, I missed this and am just looking at this now (I came back to this thread to find some book ideas for my daughter). This is a spoiler alert so for those not interested in learning about what Riordan character died, stop reading!! :)

****************

In the Trials of Apollo series, in the Burning Maze book. (I am not mentioning the character!) :(. I don't know anything about this character, but my kid adored him and was heartbroken when he died - like truly heartbroken, cried for days like a friend had died. It was pretty painful to watch and I have to tell you that I felt angry at Riordon for introducing that kind of grief to my 10 year old as much as I realize that the world is full of lessons and I can't protect my kids from everything.

I just felt like this was *my* thing to decide when I introduced it. Kind of like if Rick Riordan had spelled out sex for her in one of his books. Not his to do it. Or if the Fancy Nancy author spelled out Santa Claus or the Tooth Fairy for my younger daughter. (They haven't - that was just a what-if example). It's just not an author's business.

Grrrr. On the other hand, maybe the Riordan books aren't meant for 10 year olds so it's not fair to hold Riordan to a younger standard of care.

DD1 has not wanted to read any Rick Riordan since then, last July. I don't know if she had many books left. She wouldn't even finish that book she was so upset, which is unusual for her given how much she was into it.

:( I wish you’d just said the book title. I hadn’t read that one yet and would have stopped reading before I got to the details. Can you edit so no one else has a major thing spoiled? :(
