Looking for ideas about what color to paint our kitchen. The things in the kitchen that won’t change are the countertops which are sort of an off white/brown/grey and the floors which are a cherry and multicolor but mostly warm brown. Any tips from people better at this sort of thing than I am would be appreciated! https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190720/3df19ff9e6843c2f67b6a10bd6da7524.jpg

Those are incredibly neutral. I would do any color (not a neutral). Shade of green, blue, yellow...whatever you’re more drawn to.

Eta- I dislike white walls but if you like them, they’d look nice too.

I spend time on Pinterest and Houzz for inspiration.

Is your kitchen a totally separate room or do you need to consider the colors in adjoining rooms? SW Sea Salt is a beautiful color.

I think you need to do some big color swatches and hold them up. That stuff is very neutral, BUT I bet there are some undertones we can’t see in the pictures that the right color would draw out and make pop. I’ve got a mixed color rug in my family room with the granite colors, a pale yellow wall, dark wood coffee table, and couch/chair with grey/yellow with green tones. It really works well together that if I had looked at it separately I would think it was nuts. I’d try some stuff in the yellow/gold tones. I’d be curious if stretching over to some redness in it would do something, hard to tell.

I think you could also put a few things on the counter, like a nice dark wooden bowl that matches the darker color on the floor.

Thanks for all the advice. I am SO not good at this sort of thing. I can look at pictures on houzz and things of other rooms I like, but I’m not good at imaging how it will look in my house. The kitchen adjoins a hallway on one side that is currently a boring off white and the living room on the other side that is currently tan. We will probably be painting both at some point. Most immediately we will be painting the hallway probably a darker color. The off white is all dirty and marked up and looks horrible so something that hides dirt a little bit but is not too dark is a necessity. Since we were doing the hallway I suggested to my DH we do the kitchen as well. We will probably do the living room in the next few years as it is the kids main playroom and gets a lot of wear, but we won’t do it until they get a little bigger.

A lot of people on Houzz recommend this website for paint color questions. You may or may not find it useful.

Unless you’re worried about the mess, I would go white. It’s ‘in’ but also it’s timeless. I wish I could paint all the walls in my house white......I love that aesthetic

I, too would go with a warm white. It’s clean and a classic.

We have used Snowbound as a warmer white on trim, ceilings, etc. Can you put a chip of it next to all the samples and see if that works?

How is the lighting in there? Do you have big beautiful windows that let in a lot of light? I just keep seeing moody and dark that would look good with the granite and wood floors but I'd only like it if there was a LOT of natural light to balance it out. Otherwise I think I like white. I don't like only neutral spaces so I'm trying to imagine what actual color would look good in accessories but I'm still puzzling it out.

It is such a personal thing. I prefer a light, clean looking kitchen so I'd never personally do a deep wall color in mine, but it is totally subjective. We have a warm gray in ours (Farrow and Ball Cornforth White) - I'd say a light neutral or a warm white would be your safest bet.

I'm surprised no one has asked what color the cabinets are...or did I miss it??

We do have 2 nice sized windows, but we get afternoon light so in the evening we usually keep the blinds down or the sun is blinding. In general I would say it feels nice and open even with the blinds down since they are light filtering and not blackout blinds. The cabinets are a warm brown. I’m not at home so I can’t take a picture but I will later tonight. For my taste the cabinets are too close to the floor color. At one point I thought about having them pained white, but we got sidetracked with other home improvement projects that came first. It still may happen down the road. It’s hard for me to imagine a bold color in the kitchen as well, but I’m not opposed to it.

Yes, post a pic of the whole space! I think that the right wall color (depending on how much wall shows behind the cabinets) and the right rug will probably make you happy.

I also prefer lighter colors in kitchens, especially if counters and cabinets are darker. Another vote for SW sea salt. It’s very neutral and light...with color. I love it because it can look gray, blue, or green. I have it in my kitchen, dining, living and hallway...looks different in every room. Bang for your buck! Around here (I live on the coast), Sea Salt seems to be the go-to neutral. Grey-beiges are second. Warmer beiges are dated.

Sorry it took so long to get the pictures. This is what the current kitchen looks like. Sorry for the mess - our sink is leaking!!!

Pretty kitchen!!! OK, the picture helps. I vote for Benjamin Moore Van Deusen Blue. It's a "navy" but it's not as dark as others and has a brighter feel.

Here's how a similar blue plays off of the warm wood tones (first pic) - note that there's warm wood everywhere, including the floor, like your kitchen! And this blue looks great against white trim too (looking at your window casing) and in the 2nd pic you can see how it works both with white trim and warm wood floors (and desk and furniture accents).

I think it's fine for your floors to feel like they blend in, and let the blue walls be the pop of color but if you need a (washable!) runner, you can choose a lighter one that pulls in blues, or stick with a light creamy neutral.

And then finally I think changing out your cabinet hardware to black will make a big difference.
