View Full Version : Which of These Dresses for DD?

DD is 14 years old, 5'6-7", thin, and has the bottom 3-4" of her shoulder length auburn hair died bright orange. I need to find her a dress for our Christmas pix that will look good on her and not clash with the hair. (no, I am not going to photoshop out the hair--this is her at this point in her life...) Her brother will be wearing a light blue shirt and blue tie and blue dress pants. He might even wear his suit coat-he likes how he looks in his suit. I am not DH and I will be in the pix. If so, DH will probably go for blue. I would wear either a red dress I have or a royal blue one. They are both dresses that I can wear to work-not evening wear.

Which of these 3 would you pick? (she would be ok with any of these)

This one in malachite. She has it in yellow, which she wore for her 8th grade graduation and it looks good on her--but she can't wear yellow with her current hair.

This looks cute

This is ok-in black. I don't know that I like black in a photo of a 14 yo girl????

I think the first one, the other two are too old looking for her age, I actually find them a bit fussy. The first one is very cute. I don't know that I'd worry about her hair clashing, if that's her hair color currently I'd gi with it, maybe wear it back a bit? Of course you can't go wrong with black, but if your son is wearing blue, the yellow might be a nice contrast.

Have you looked at the junior department or teen store? They’d open up a lot of good age appropriate dresses.
Suggestion- don’t wear red. Things don’t sound really well blended already and red sticks out. But, I’ll let other moms chime in that are really good at picking clothes for family photo shoots.

First one! Most age appropriate. Black would work nicely

SnuggleBunnies--I did look at the juniors. They all involve mini skirt dresses with skinny straps/no backs or sleeves. The shoot will be outside and DD would freeze. She also doesn't like those dresses. We tried some on and she doesn't fill them out well on top.

edited to add-the Macys juniors look nicer than Dillards--thanks! I will look through these some more. Quite a few were cute on top but have really short skirts. DD isn't comfortable with that look. (and neither am I unless it was a dress to wear for a dance)

I guess I will wear the blue dress I have instead of the red....

I like the malachite one. I say give it a try and see if it isn't too contrasting with the orange hair. :D

First one (malachite) for sure! The other two look too Wednesday Addams and stiff looking to me.

If the shoot is outside, maybe consider more casual clothing? Pants, jeans, sweaters? You might have better luck coordinating.

I was thinking the same thing. The shoot location is good info to have.

Agreed. The second reads frumpy and the third reminds me of Wednesday Addams.

Ha! I hadn't read your comment before writing the same thing. :)

Also agree that more casual clothing would look nice. Dressy, but casual.

I was thinking a more casual dress with leggings, or maybe a bigger tunic sweater with leggings or skinny jeans and boots. Of the original 3 options the first is by far the best, but might be pretty cold for an outdoor photo shoot depending on where you live.

I also like the first one and would prefer it in black. I don't see any problem with her wearing black.

I like dresses 1,3,4, and 9 from the ones Snuggles posted.

I think you could make #1 work with black leggings or tights and a pair of boots. Weather wise I think that would work best.

I can get her into a dress. Trying to get her into a whole coordinated outfit will be painful for me. She is a kid who wears red converse sneakers, oversized shirts, and loose pants. She will wear the dress again so that’s where I’m aiming

And she is warm blooded-she will be fine outside while I will be the one who is cold

I like a lot of the dresses snuggles posted, especially the prints or non-blue. Sounds like you have a lot of blue already? And might be good to tie in her hair color somewhere.

Then you know what have her wear red Converse, leggings, and a sweater or dress #1. You want her to be comfortable.

Hmmm.... if she likes wearing red converse, what about-
first dress in black with red converse
you in red dress
guys switch over to white or silvery/grey shirts? It may work with blue. But when I imagine it, I can picture white/grey/black/red as a really nice combo.

Cute dress with converse shoes is a very popular combo right now, and it would give a younger flare to the dress.

Agreed. This is probably the only time in her life it will be fine for her to wear this in a formal picture. :)

Maybe something like this with tights and her red converse?

Totally channeling my inner hippie chick here...(I would totally wear this if I were a teen). It would look fine with Converse.
https://www.nordstromrack.com/shop/product/2920608/lunachix-heathered-smocked-long-sleeve-dress?color=NAVY%20FLORAL

I think either of these prints would work with her hair.

I'm on the fence with this one. It says "spruce" as the color, so I bet it's a nice deep green that will complement your DDs coloring.

I think something a little more casual and teen-like would be nice for an outdoor setting.

The second, one the navy floral, is really cute and would be more fall like and coordinate with the others better than the black, and yes, let her wear her converse, that is totally the style and it like her hair is part of her personality and like PP said, would work in the outdoor setting.

Ok, we ended up with the first dress I posted in black and she is wearing the red converse. When I suggested leggings or a cardigan because it will be in November, my warm blooded child just said, "why?". Oh well, the shoot is a "mini session"--only 15 minutes--so she will survive and I will be cold just looking at her :ROTFLMAO: Thanks for your feedback--DD enjoyed reading it too.

DH and I will not be in the photo. DS will wear his blue suit or at least the navy pants and light blue shirt. The photographer has a "set" that features a vintage black taxi and a tree with presents. Not sure how the black dress will work with the taxi but this photographer is very good and she will figure it out.

I should be happy she didn't insist on wearing pajama pants or her regular outfit of mom jeans with ripped knees, t-shirt, and chucks. (no leggings, she no longer wears skinny jeans, but she will wear wide leg pants) She has a quirky fashion sense and I am happy to let her express herself. After 9 years of wearing a uniform, she is thrilled to wear what she wants. She isn't a girly girl at all. This all makes for interesting fashion choices but it makes her happy and she doesn't look like she's homeless or on a street corner so I'm going with it!!!
