View Full Version : Recommend your sound/white noise machine for sleeping (for me)

I posted on another thread about using a weighted blanket to help me sleep more soundly. I haven't gotten one of those to try yet, but a few posters recommended a sound machine to help drown out DH's snoring and the cats. I've looked around online and it seems that the Marpac Dohm and the Lectrofan are the most highly recommended ones, but they are also expensive. Any other recommendations? Things I think I'd like it to have are no recognizable looping, no lights showing on it (that will just keep me awake), a variety of sounds (DH likes the nature ones I've tried on my Calm app, I think I prefer the fan sound), and a timer to set it to go off after I fall asleep. Any other recommendations I should look at? Right now I am considering this Avantek at Amazon https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B072FS9MC8/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A3AEN0BL6JRTVL&psc=1 and this iHome Zenergy at Kohls https://www.kohls.com/product/prd-3352583/ihome-zenergy-portable-sleep-therapy-machine-with-bass-enhancement.jsp?prdPV=3

We've been very happy with the Homedics one that is usually around $20 on Amazon. Though I think it has a small light diode. Should be pretty easy to cover something like that with duct tape though. We leave it on all night, but it has timer options.

How long have you had it? It seemed quite a few reviews said it didn't last long before it stopped working.

We have and like the Marpac. I paid $31 last November so you can probably find it around that if you watch Amazon deals of the day.

I had a homedics for about 10 years before I met DH and he could hear the "loop" (he is an audiophile) and we started buying marpacs. We have one in every bedroom and a travel one. That said, I have the White Noise app on my phone, and the "brown noise" setting is similar enough when we travel. And DH says no "loop". I am pretty sure we paid $25-$30 for our Marpacs, only buying when Amazon ran deals.

ETA: the homedics is still going strong at my parents house.

I use a small Holmes air purifier. The fan noise is perfect for me. I keep it under my bed, so the small light doesn't bother me.

Thanks, I will keep my eye open for Amazon deals before the holidays. For those with the Homedics one linked above, do you notice any looping on any of the sounds? I like having the different options for nature sounds, vs. just having a fan with the Marpac.

We have gone through more than one, but they last a couple of years.

Some of the sounds the looping is noticeable and some it isn’t. It has never bothered me, but you may be more sensitive to it than I am.

Edit: They have a Dohm at the place my kids have had to go to sleep quite a few times for a research study they do, and I have never been a fan. But I know it is really popular with a lot of people!

my daughter has this one and it works great! https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LBVLBKY/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

the small size makes it so easy to bring when we travel.

That is adorable! It says it has fan, white noise, and an ocean sound? How about a timer?

Just check on that little one--it says it plugs in with a USB cord. I had one sound machine that had a tiny USB connection and it didn't last long--I have to put the machine on my bed to muffle the dog snoring and it can get moved around. I ended up damaging the USB connection somehow and now can't use it. I have another sound machine where the plug into the machine is with a regular cord connection but it plugs into the power source with a USB cable. That works fine.

we love our marpacs (and have three of them!). Agree with other posters--add a price alert to camelcamelcamel once it hits sub-$35.

That is adorable! It says it has fan, white noise, and an ocean sound? How about a timer? The Q&A section says it does not have a timer. My DD leaves it on all night so that is not an issue for us. Also, we have no problem at all with the cord that we use with it. Stays plugged in all the time. ETA: we have been using it over 2 years. DD only uses ones of the white noises (sounds like pink or brown to me).

Why don’t you just get an app? I absolutely LOVE Relax Melodies. There are a TON of free sounds that one can overlap, if desired, as well as a timer. There are some interesting sounds in the premium version, but I am quite content with the free offerings. I use it to help with sleep, with meditation, and also as background noise while I study.

I have been using sounds on my Calm app on my phone for the past week or so, trying out different sounds. I figured if its something I'm going to use every night, I should just get a machine. I normally turn my phone ringer and volume (so it doesn't vibrate loudly) off at night in case I get late texts or app alerts in the middle of the night (have had it happen before).

Pretty sure you can use the 20% off coupon on the Marpac at Bed, Bath, and Beyond https://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/store/s/dohm
