Which items have been the biggest hits?
And what sort of container do you put everything in?

Hoping to start doing some of these when we host parties...

Thanks! :)

I got this book for my stepmom based on recommendations here. I liked it so much I ordered a copy for myself and my two SILs! Really fun book and fun way to eat and entertain. :)

The blogger Mix and Match Mama loves charcuterie boards- you can probably find tons of ideas on her blog.

I also bought this extra long board to use which is perfect for our small family.

I bought this book for myself for Christmas but haven’t looked at it yet.

We usually do a mix of manchego cheese, Brie, a cheddar of some sort, mini club crackers, pretzel crisps, prosciutto, pepperoni, dates, hummus, olives, membrillo, fresh fruit, baguette, dried cherries, etc. Pretty much whatever we have hanging around goes on the board.

This is one I did for the holidays. Manchego, raw cheddar and Brie. A couple different kinds of crackers, including a grain free set. The dried apricots were a huge hit. Hummus in a small bowl. Raw cashews and an upside down apple added color. 4953

For inspiration, check out the instagram account cheese by numbers: https://www.instagram.com/cheesebynumbers/?hl=en. I think maybe I read about it in Real Simple?

I have to admit, I have yet to build one of her cheese plates but I find this account fascinating. She uses the swipe feature to show you how to make the plate and tells you all the parts of it in the caption.

This is cute! I am good with flavors and not so good with arrangements, so this is helpful!

I like a little jar of fig or onion jam on my cheese plates. Pepper jam also had its moment. It's nice to add a little sweetness. Red grapes are also popular.

I like St. Andre or a double cream brie, a harder cheese like a cheddar, and something in between like a smoked gouda or a firm goat cheese. For crackers I like original or low salt triscuits, carr's water crackers, or trader joe's pita rounds. I prefer smoked fish (salmon, bluefish, trout) to the cured meats and like to serve them with a bit of cream cheese. I also like those canned smoked oysters or anchovies on a cracker with cream cheese too, but I know that's not everyone's thing.

Staples on our board include -

Dalmatia fig jam, or in a pinch apricot preserves
Casveltrano olives - delicious, this was a Pioneer Woman rave, and they are delicious. Watch for pits
Dried apricots
Cured meats - prosciutto, coppa, salami, etc
Crackers of at least 2-3 different types - a plain water cracker is usually one of the choices
Breadsticks or grissini
Fresh fruit like grapes or strawberries - chill the grapes slightly and leave on the stem for an artistic effect.
Crunch veggies like broccoli, celery, tomatoes, peas or whatever I can deconstruct from a grocery store small veg and Dip tray.
Cheeses we really like are, minimum 2 on the board - Seaside Cheddar or Point Reyes Blue cheese or a plain wedge or small wheel of Brie - or anything else yummy or seasonal that caught out tastebuds.... or whatever ends we have in fridge if it’s a dinner-snack platter just for us. Humbler Fog and Midnight Moon are also faves here. Costco cheese is delicious but their portions are huge so you will be eating leftover cheese for days. A reasonable amount goes a long way with good cheese, and I cut the large sized ones so the remaining portion isn’t wasted by everyone picking all over it but not eating it. If it needs replenishing, then we add more and tidy the board up too.

I don’t try too hard to match cheeses to accompaniments or wines/ beverages. Pinterest has some handy little visual guides that I refer to if it’s a large board/very discerning type group being served. It’s very easy to make a lovely little spread with items we keep on hand in pantry and cheese we grab at store. I aim for color and variety in tastes and textures - crunchy, creamy, salty, sweet, etc. My picky eater loves these boards as it is visually appealing, everyone else looks enthralled with it, so he does try different things.

Unless I’m absolutely sure of the crowd and their restrictions/preferences, I don’t serve nuts or crackers with sesame seeds. And have also plated the meats on a separate little board so as to be welcoming to everyone (non pork or non meat eaters). I’ve also done separate dessert boards - mini items from grocery store or bakery, mini cookies, mini bars or brownies, candy etc arranged nicely.

We have a large Boos chopping board that is rarely used for chopping and interesting (long one from a craft shop in South America, a Texas shape one gifted as a housewarming present) / smaller boards like the wooden Breville bread board that sits on top the matching toaster oven. I use whichever size is appropriate to the party being served. It needs to look abundant so using the largest board board or tray doesn’t always work. I use small clear glass Pyrex or white ramekins for dips and put little spoons and pretty marble handled spreaders in each one. And also some type of holder for toothpicks. Bed Bath sells some super cute little Oneida silver serving tongs in their kitchen section. Target, TJ Maxx and similar stores are great places to pick up cute items you can use to make it unique.
