Interesting article by an expert about the potential pitfalls of making decisions based on the very incomplete data on coronavirus https://www.statnews.com/2020/03/17/a-fiasco-in-the-making-as-the-coronavirus-pandemic-takes-hold-we-are-making-decisions-without-reliable-data/

Well, if the FDA hadn't botched the test development, we would have a whole lot more data.

In the absence of data, you err on the side of not killing a bunch of people. Thus, we wait in isolation until they can get their s#!t together and we can get real data.

Most of the epidemiologists and virologists I look at on Twitter are highly critical of that commentary. No action is the worst thing we could do right now, even in the face of data gaps.

I would encourage people who read that article to read the pieces that critique it.

Yea, we badly need more testing. But we have to do what we can to limit spread *RIGHT NOW* in terms of social distancing. It is all we have to buy ourselves time to get data.

I’m skeptical of that Medium piece but I don’t feel like that means we should do LESS. I feel like it means we don’t know so we should be careful!

I don’t think he is arguing for doing less, he’s arguing for making sure we continue to accumulate data to make better decisions going forward. This is just one of many pieces critical of the model put out by Imperial College. The model is only as good as the data being put into it.

The countries which have handled the testing well, like Germany or South Korea, would be better situated to do this analysis. We aren’t alone in trying to figure this out.

I'm not sure what you mean by this?

This was a good read on the subject of testing and how every country’s policy and politics made a difference-
