You guys were so helpful with paint colors a while back that I have a new question. Carpeting! Where to start? We've never lived anywhere long enough to replace the carpeting, and we've had some yucky stuff in rentals over the years. We need to replace carpet on the stairwell and upstairs hallway in our new place. The stuff DH's employer put down in our employee housing four and a half years ago looks gross and worn. We are a take-your-shoes-off-at-the-front-door family, but with five kids, everything gets hard wear. So any advice or brands to avoid? We're doing this all remotely, since we're doing our interstate move after the contractor has finished our house, and while I have the local tile and carpet store's website up, I am getting glassy eyed just trying to figure out the options.

Glad to hear you’re shopping locally. Since you aren’t there, head to any carpet store or big box store and just start looking and touching. Feel can be enhanced with a good pad so don’t skimp on that.
Make sure you don’t wind up with something that requires a special vacuum or other tedious care.
I just went to feel the remnants in our basement. Previous owners installed it and I couldn’t find a label. Honestly it’s pretty lackluster in the remnant but it’s wonderfully comfortable in our bedrooms so maybe don’t read too much into store samples after all!

It depends on your preferences. We put in Berber carpet, which I had not seen before, in our first house in 2002. It's basically "looped" carpet so you don't have the cut ends. We got a softer one so it still felt cushy when walking barefoot, but they do have some with a tighter weave that's supposed to be more "durable." My childhood home had the "cut" style of carpet which wasn't as soft and never looked as "neat" because it quickly lost the vacuum lines. Berber carpet won't have vacuum lines but they do have some lines because of the loops. We also paid for the "upgraded" carpet pad so it would feel even more cushy.

In our second home. the seller replaced the carpet right before listing it and they used a cut and loop style (some cut, some loop) so it had a texture. Our third home is all hard surfaces, but we still have some rugs underfoot.

I found this website has good photos to compare carpet styles:

I will say that if you're a shoe-less house, then think about what feels good on bare foot. We also have always had a dog in all 3 homes, so the carpet and rugs always need to be steam cleaned annually because of dirt tracked in by our dog.

Looked over that link. We definitely have cut saxony. There’s Berber on the stairs to the basement and I’m so glad it’s only there! The other material hides so much more! I feel like I’d have to vacuum daily and that’s not going to happen. Things just kind of sit on top. I like the look but not the upkeep. YMMV.

When we did a bedroom years ago, I went to a local place and just asked them what was a good soft carpet for a kids room that would last 10-15 years and still look okay after heavy playing. He showed me what most people bought from him. He bought one color of it in bulk, it was a beige, so it was cheaper than picking a custom order color and it was great for 10 years, then allergies got us and we ripped it out and did wood in that room.

Call the company and ask them and then see if you can find it locally to touch and see the colors in person.

One thing about Berber, because it’s looped like that it can snag. Because of that we have always avoided it at all cost.

I love when in every room in my house there is a special style, but it goes well with each other. I can say that I have almost achieved this. Now I can choose really comfortable interior items that aren't useless and carry out some important functions, but before I couldn’t choose good home goods and very often got into trouble if I bought home textiles. My husband agreed that we need help for repairs in the house, so we found a special company that provides such services. See examples of their work on their website https://www.swissinterior.com.sg/renovation . It seems to me that they really work well and they helped me make renovation in the house, taking into account all my wishes, but were able to choose high-quality products for interior design.

Do you have an actual carpet recommendation to give or are you just advertising?
