I would love a BBB recommendation! I'd love to get DS1 started on something like this over the summer. Any programs that seemed really worthwhile? DS1 is a great test taker but I think sometimes it is of benefit to learn some test taking strategies. I am researching what Khan academy might offer for a high schooler as well. He does well in his upper level math classes but he'll have AP Physics and Math Analysis next year so I think getting a solid foundation will be of benefit!

Thanks!!

Khan Academy will link to PSATs and target the tutorials to areas of need.

I'm looking too. PSAT was canceled, so nothing to link to Khan :(.

My DS used Khan Academy plus a couple workbooks. Even if you don't have a PSAT to plug in, you can take practice tests that will help you hone in on areas to work on. My DD was stronger on ACT so we did about 10 hours of private tutoring using Revolution Prep (Khan Academy works best for SAT not ACT). There are coupons or referrals available for RP worth around $200 IIRC. Both ended up in the 99th percentile.

NOT inexpensive but using Thirty Six Education. It’s always been online/virtual so they are totally set up for this mode. DD just started but I’ve been very impressed so far. One of the first things they do is assess whether ACT or SAT will be a better fit.

Not sure I’d invest much money (or time) on prep. I think many schools are moving to test optional.

Some schools are only going test optional for 2020-2021 or for a few years and then reevaluating. Right now, DS1's top 2 choices are still requiring SAT/ACT.

That's what DS1 did last summer before 11th grade. I wouldn't pay for a program until after his 11th grade PSAT and you see how he does. DS1 took the PSAT and PreACT both 10th and 11th grade at school for free before deciding what test to stick with based on his scores and which test he liked better (he's doing the ACT).

To qualify for merit aid you will still need to submit test scores. Since we don't qualify for need based aid we will be searching out schools that offer the most merit money. Unfortunately, DS1 started private test prep in January for the April ACT test, which was canceled, then he was signed up for June but when that didn't look like it was going to happen he registered for July. Fingers crossed he gets to take it although I've heard people in other states already getting their July tests canceled. SATs are even more of a clusterf*ck with people not even able to register even for September or October dates.

If you're not already, I'd highly recommend joining the "Grown and Flown Parents" and "Paying For College 101" private Facebook groups. I've learned sooo much about the college search, college application process, etc since I joined. I think I'd be totally lost and misinformed without them.
