View Full Version : Corner Wedge Seat on Sectional Couch: Do you have one?

DH and I are (finally) able to look at sectionals, and he likes the little wedge seating in the corner of the sectionals.

Curious: Do you have one, and do you like it?

DH has long legs and he felt very comfortable. I am a lot shorter and it's an awkward spot for me. I also am not a fan of how they look.

DH will go along with whatever I want to get. We're making sure it has a chaise that is big enough for him. But if it's something he'd get a lot of use out of I'm willing to consider it.

We sit there with legs stretched out on couch. DH likes it as gives good support for his back

That's the seat on our sectional that either a kid curls up in, or an adult sits in with their feet up (as if it were a chaise). It gets plenty of use for things like movie night, reading. Where it gets zero use is for guests....so if one of the reasons you're getting a sectional is to increase seating capacity, you can totally count that seat OUT. Also, whenever that seat is in use, it is 75% likely that one (or more, depending on how much DH stretches out) of the other seats will be automatically in use, as part of the "chaise effect". So for things like movie nights, think of how everyone will sit to get at a comfortable viewing angle.

This is us too. I love the wedge. Dd and I fight over it. When we were looking at sectionals, the decorator said to make sure to get a wedge that wasn’t a complete square like this: https://joybird.com/corner-sectionals/serena-corner-sectional/?fabric=taylor_golden&wood_stain=medium&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_content=serena-corner-sectional&utm_campaign=google_shopping_feed&utm_campaign=nb_shopping_general&utm_term=sofas&gclid=CjwKCAjwlZf3BRABEiwA8Q0qq1ZGw4k3EKmb7ynw6nMp 0lon3vVT2pEb1gTBTbUH-4zXnEuzbweRbxoC6fkQAvD_BwE. On a wedge like that, it can’t be used as a seat if the 2 adjacent cushions are being used. There’s no room for the person sitting in the middle to put their legs.

A wedge like this could be used for seating even if there are people sitting on both sides: https://www.macys.com/shop/product/wedport-5-pc.-fabric-l-shape-modular-sectional-sofa-with-wedge-corner-piece-created-for-macys?ID=9792906&pla_country=US&cm_mmc=Google_Furniture_PLA-_-Furniture_Big_Ticket_-_GS_Couches_%26_Sofas-_-229373816302-_-pg2013520_m_kclickid_9a147a18-113a-4482-85a5-ece861287af7_KID_EMPTY_966950377_45609995462_22937 3816302_pla-382685059095_146159USA__m_KID_&trackingid=449x2013520&m_sc=sem&m_sb=Google&m_tp=PLA&m_ac=Google_Furniture_PLA&m_ag=Couches%26Sofas&m_cn=Furniture_Big_Ticket_-_GS&m_pi=go_cmp-966950377_adg-45609995462_ad-229373816302_pla-382685059095_dev-m_ext-_prd-146159USA&gclid=CjwKCAjwlZf3BRABEiwA8Q0qqxoUbLRaBMFF5nmMmelW wYxzM2ZfBJaDaMzuuSZ-8f0-aWQ_aSsp8BoCO5cQAvD_BwE

I lied. We don’t have a wedge. Mine is the complete square PP’s decorator said to avoid. It’s perfectly comfortable but we never need all the seats so leg space isn’t an issue. Basically dh and I have our own chaises. I’m actually not sure I’d like a wedge compared to the corner. Ours is like this

This is the style we looked at today, and they had floor samples both with and without the wedge. Thank you for your opinions, though now I’m really torn! Sounds like we should take the kids to test it out together and see how everyone would fit.

I think it depends on how much room you have. The square corner wedge takes up less space. If you don’t need the extra seating or you have a tight space, the square makes more sense.

We LOVE it. We fight over both the wedge corner and the chaise spots. We are all very tall (DS1 is 6'5" and still growing) and the wedge is his favorite spot to curl up.

PunkyBoo, so glad to hear that! A friend of mine has the same sectional and highly recommended it, too. There are a couple of recent bad reviews on the Macys website, which makes me extra happy to hear that you like it.

We rarely have extra people over besides my mom so it's never been an issue. Even with all 5 of us here 24/7 there's rarely more than 3 of us in the living room at once.

We have a wedge corner and it doesn't get as much use as the reclining seats, but I really like it! I curl up there often, and also sit with my legs stretched out onto the next cushion, or on the recliner next to the wedge.

Because the wedge gets a lot of love, the cushion is a little less firm now than the other cushions. But it all still looks and feels great. I love that there's enough room for all 4 of us to watch TV or a movie together very comfortably.

We have a full wedge. Someone could sit there in the corner but I'm not sure anyone really has for longer than a moment. There's lots of space between the edge and the back that it would take a few extra layers of pillows. We are usually up in the corner with legs extended like a chaise. It is nice that we can all fit comfortably in our family room to watch a movie. I remember really wanting the wedge when we were shopping for the sectional but I can't say it's a deal-breaker now that we've had it.

I prefer the look of no wedge, with the cushion neatly squared off. I know that’s superficial but it’s true. The couch a PP linked is very similar to my 17yo couch that has held up wonderfully. But on account of the wedge it’s too deep for my room. Part of the reason we can get away with not having a wedge is that two of my kids are still pretty small and can fit sitting cross legged in the corner seat, no wedge notwithstanding!

We have wedge seat. It’s where the dog sits when we are all in it or where my lanky 6 ft kid sprawls out. I had a square off one in my family room. I basically used it as a backrest if I was lying in the couch reading. So much depends on the shape, size back support if the piece.

This is our couch! And we have the wedge - it was high priority for me! I love scooting in there, as does everyone. We have one sitting section next to the wedge (we got 2, but it was too much and moved it somewhere else - wish we hadn't bought it), a 2-seater couch section on the long side, and then another sitting section to extend the long side. Instead of buying a chaise section for that final seat, we just got the footrest, which acts as a chaise when it's in front of the far end of the couch - same size, but more flexible. I love that we can all sit on the couch and lounge. But we have a big living room for it.

I will say after a couple years it's a little softer than I'd like. But I like a really firm couch that I can easily get off of when I want! And compared to others, I guess you wouldn't really call it soft.

We have a custom made leather sectional that has a full corner piece. We fight over who gets to sit there. The best thing about our sofa that my husband insisted on (but I never thought of) is that we have bench cushions on both pieces. So the only crack between the cushions is at the corner where the two pieces connect. It makes it so much more comfortable for laying on. Also less places to lose stuff or for dirt and dog hair to accumulate. I will be looking for this in every sofa we buy from now on.

But, you have less options to swap cushions when they wear unevenly. We have spots we tend to always use and others that are totally neglected. I’ve rotated the cushions over the years and would hate to have lost that ability. Cushions, for me, need to be more modular- I want to be able to swap them and flip them upside down. For laying on it the seams don’t bother me if I put a throw blanket down on it. I’m looking at my bench cushioned love seat and noticing it’s uneven wear. I’ll flip the cushion soon but we always sit with just 1 person and they always use the same part (close to the end table).
You do make it sound appealing though so it clearly works for some people!!
Happy couch shopping, OP!

Yes, you are right about not being able to rotate cushions. Or flip a cushion if there is a spill (though you can’t do that with leather anyway since it is not leather on the underside.) I have been making sure to rotate where we sit. My mom has a sectional with recliners on 2 ends and those seats are worn while the other parts are in good shape.
