I will be having my first colonoscopy later this week. I am not yet 40 but with my mom's colon cancer and genetic issues it was recommended I have one. Oh course no one is excited about the cleanse or procedure however I am mostly concerned about the liquid diet. I get really angry when I am hungry and am just generally miserable. From the few people I know that have had one, it seems that the prep and food restrictions vary a bit. I was told:

"a clear liquid diet is food you can see through and includes water, fruit juices, jello, clear broth or bouillon and popsicles... Avoid all solid foods, milk, orange juice, etc." I spoke with the nurse and she also said no coffee :(.

Do any of you have suggestions for something that will make me feel less hungry? I detest jello (can't get myself to swallow it) and don't like broth or soup but will eat it. I will have 64 ounces of liquid to drink with mirilax, but I am hoping I can find something to pretend to "eat" along with it.
Thanks!

Dh had a genetic form of cc when he was 23 so he’s had many colonoscopies over the years. Broth (actually beef consumme) and popsicles are his preference. He’ll eat jello too. Special K used to make “protein water”. I don’t know if they still do or if there’s a similar product but he thought it filled him up some. It’s just a miserable hungry day with grouchiness and headaches but then it’s over (says the person who hasn’t had one but that’s how it looks).

Make sure you avoid red colored stuff too.

I am a regular. I’m shocked about the no coffee. I’ve always had coffee and a tablespoon of almond milk (don’t tell!!) the morning before and it’s been fine.

Diet Coke (I almost never drink)
Tea with lemon and sugar (I never use sugar normally)
Broth

Oh and try not to consume things you really love. You might find you can’t disassociate them from the queasiness you might get. Dh won’t drink some types of Gatorade anymore.

Italian ices may help. You do t want to have to repeat due to poor prep, so I would follow directions strictly.

Yes to the above. I hate to tell you, but the prep is really terrible, you will not want to eat much anyway. I had jello, popsicles and sprite.

If you can just not try to overthink the feeling of this is going to be terrible, it will go faster. Just pick a few things, like clear broth (chicken or beef)/gatorade or other clear liquids that have sugar or something filling. I drink these Premier Protein clear drinks, they have 20 g of protein and really fill me up. If you can, avoid being around others who are eating if you think it will make you feel hungry. The prep doesn't take as long as it did in the past. I will say, buy some wipes as it will be tender after the prep kicks in.

When I had my last colonoscopy** a couple of years ago, the clear liquid prep wasn’t awful (although boring). The harder part was being on a bland ultra low fiber diet for several days before switching to the clear liquids. When I looked at the diet sheet for that, I realized that I never eat any of those things (white rice, plain mashed potatoes, cream of wheat etc). But since you didn’t mention that, perhaps this is no longer part of your recommended prep. If so, consider yourself lucky!!

**it was in fact my last, because this is one routine screening procedure for which I’ve "aged out" since I have no risk factors. Hooray!

My DS1 has ulcerative colitis and has had a few colonoscopies. Make sure nothing you put in your mouth is red!

DS just pretty much drinks the Gatorade with Miralax and has a few popsicles. I would probably get a box of the Trader Joe's miso ginger broth which is really good.

There are so many different preps! The one OP mentioned sounds the same as dh though he is allowed black coffee. Years ago there were steps that needed to be done starting a week before and the day before prep day there were restrictions too. Never had any problems with this one (Miralax and Dulcolax prep).

It's really not so bad. For mine, I could have vanilla milkshakes. I'm also surprised by "no coffee" stipulation.

Coffee is on the ok list as provided by a major teaching hospital in Chicago. I just double checked.

I have never done a Miralex prep, so maybe that has different requirements.

In the follow up report, the doctor will give a number based on how well the prep worked.

? And tell the patient? That’s never come up. Not something I’d expect. He sees the head of the department of a major teaching hospital (worked his way up in the 20 years we started with him- lucky to be grandfathered in to his practice!).

It’s probably never come up. The score is always on my report. It’s called the BBPS. I get colonoscopies once or twice a year and it’s been on every report.

I have done two and the clear liquid diet was the easy part. It's the hours in the bathroom that were terrible. I highly recommend Tucks.

For liquids, I love broth, which is filling. Vegetable broth is good too. I love tea so I drank a lot of different flavors. Popsicles are great but make sure they don't have pulp. I also mixed clear juice with seltzer for a fun drink. I hated the Premier Protein clear drinks. None of us could drink it.
