Hello everyone!

We just found out that neighbors of ours are unexpectedly - but joyfully - pregnant. However, one of the parents is wheelchair-bound. Are there any drop-side cribs that are still available? What alternatives are there?

Any advice/gift suggestions welcome!

ETA: These are poor people. There is no way they can afford a crib that costs more than their (one) car. The local thrift shop says that it is illegal is resell a drop side crib. I've been looking on facebook & craigslist, but nothing is available at the moment.

I’d assume one could find a used drop side crib somewhere maybe?

I used a drop side crib with both of my girls and the drop side never malfunctioned. Yes there has to be an alternative for handicapped parents.

Try a neighborhood group. Dropside cribs still get swapped around in ours.

I think if you approached a local Lions Club, they may be able to help. Hopefully there would be a member, who is a carpenter. See if that person could retrofit one side buy using hinges and a childproof latch. Perhaps using the latch used on the top of a baby gate that has a swinging door built in. On a wooden crib the legs could be cut to the right height. Try to bring photos of the expensive cribs so they have an idea of what is needed.

https://www.ebay.com/p/22043418010 This may work while the baby is small?

Or this one? It is also height adjustable

You could see if the local AMBUCS would help, my neighbor volunteers with them, they are wonderful, I see him building all kinds of stuff for folks with disabilities (raised gardens, ramps etc).

Those are cool!

Definitely— and at least the pedialift model is classified as durable medical equipment (not sure about the other one), which could mean insurance coverage.

Here’s an example of a DIY accessible crib that was made using a regular crib. Those specialty cribs are super expensive!
