Thank you all! I texted with her a little while ago and she seems a bit better. She has a wonderful GP who is in the loop and very happy with the care she is getting. She is taking ivermectin which is a good option I guess? FIL is in good spirits and still healthy. He took her some stuff from home so she was happy about that. I feel a little less panicky for now.

Ivermectin has been used in other countries with great success. It doesn't seem to be as widely used in the US, but hopefully that is changing.

I'm glad your MIL is doing better.

Weird. Isn't this the med for dogs to prevent heartworm? Interesting.

Weird. Isn't this the med for dogs to prevent heartworm? Interesting.

It is a drug used to treat lice. But it also must be used for horses, because my sister and her husband were able to order the horse version of it, as it is the same and they just need to convert for weight.

(note they want it as a back up in case they need it and many doctors in the US are to prescribing it yet)

Yes, it is an anti-parasitic first developed for use in animals, then later in humans. It has recently been studied as an anti-viral.

I have a friend who's constantly posting on FB about how the US needs to approve this treatment. I've never done research on it, because I can't get past the idea of taking a medicine that I gave my 4H pigs :ROTFLMAO: Obviously if it works and I need it I would take it, but it just kinda makes me a little grossed out for some reason.

I am so happy to hear she is doing a bit better! This is such a stressful thing for a family to go through.

I assume your FIL has not tested positive? Hopefully he stays that way, but just in case, I am linking to this article (https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2021/01/11/955716308/tracking-down-antibody-treatment-is-a-challenge-for-covid-19-patients) discussing the use of antibody therapy BEFORE hospitalization to help prevent severe symptoms. All the major hospitals around me use this, but that isn't true of everywhere, and some of the issue comes down to seeking treatment early on.

I think it must be used fairly regularly in Melaine's state. A few weeks ago, a FB friend said that she knew several people there who took it and improved rather quickly. Some of her friends joined in and agreed. Then they said the governor of our state was keeping it from people because he wanted more people to die (eye roll) and then it spun off into some right-wing conspiracy theories. (more eye roll).

I tried to do some research, but had a hard time finding much on it. Melaine, I hope it's successful for your MIL!

My sister’s husband is from another country and is a researcher by profession. He has read so many different journals (luckily he is fluent in 5 languages) and has studied how other countries are treating or not treating patients with covid. It is his opinion that the US has focused too much on vaccines and not enough in regards to treatment, in part because the big money is in vaccines, not pharmaceuticals. This drug is dirt cheap. He says many countries are using this drug on patients, but in the US not many are using it. In fact two families went to court (in Buffalo), because their doctor would not prescribe it for their relatives that were in critical condition. The judge sided with the families, that the doctor should prescribe it as these families had nothing to lose. Both patients made a remarkable turn around within days of starting the medication.

This is why my sister and her husband ordered some. They want it just in case they get sick and can’t find a doctor to prescribe it for them.

It really takes time and there are ups and downs. The hard part of Covid is that when it hits hard, it hits hard. If there is a way you can lift her spirits, that would be great for her. Cards or video messages from grandkids or Facetimes could help with that.

I had a friend who just went through this with her father. He was getting discouraged and anxious. Face timing helped and they gave him some anxiety meds to help him relax. He pulled out of it rather well despite them calling her in at one point to say good bye. He's now home from rehab and doing wonderfully well, but there was a lot of discouraging moments for the first two weeks, so just do your best to help reassure her. They also would drop cards and pictures off at the hospital for him to make him feel a little more connected with the family.

Yes, a family in Rochester, NY had to sue their mom's hospital in order for the treatment to be prescribed.
