I bought my bike before I was pregnant with DS1 so it’s almost 15 years old. It needs some work but rather than put more money into it I would like to replace it. What should I get? My bike is an off brand from a local bike shop. It’s heavy though. I would like to be able to try doing some distance riding since we have great bike paths.

I just bought a Trek Verve last summer. I really like it a lot.

I have a specialized bike that I really like. It’s light and I can get it on a Thule bike rack without needing anything extra.

Not Trek. They're backed up nearly a year. I ordered Treks for my kids that were supposed to be Christmas gifts (though I didn't order until February). They are expected to come in by November. These were mid-range (~$600) mountain bikes. I can't remember the model name! Sorry!

This is the one I have. It’s the comfiest bike I’ve ever ridden, but it’s definitely for paved roads/trails. I mostly ride around our neighborhood with the kids.

I was also fascinated with this company when I was looking (last spring and they didn’t have stock then).

Do you have a local shop? Trying them out is key.

We use our bikes in Acadia every summer, ride them for 7 days, many miles every day on the carriage trails. At home we ride on the rail trails here on the weekends. I went to the local shop, told them what I wanted it for, that I did not want to spend over $700, and they had me try a bunch on the rail trail behind the shop, they all felt very different. I picked the one that fit and felt best for me. My friend went with me and picked one that I really thought was uncomfortable, she loved it. So, everyone is different, and if you can try them out, you will be better off. I ended up with a Trek. It is a little boring, solid black, but I can ride it for miles.

I have an Electra Townie too. I have a cross bar we put on it to get it on the bike rack. We ride on bike paths at the beach and the park. For really long rides OP may want a lighter bike

Definitely try them out at a local shop if possible. I was convinced I wanted a townie. When we got to the bike shop they were out because of the covid rush to buy bikes, but he had other treks available. My neighbor has a townie so I knew what that felt like. To my surprise the one I got I ended up liking better. He also fit me to a much bigger bike than I would have bought on my own based on my height. We got lucky in the fact that he had bikes in stock. He saw what was happening in Texas at the beginning of the pandemic (we're in the Midwest) and ordered 100 different bikes from Trek. A big gamble for a small, rural town bike shop. It paid off though because he was having people drive 2+ hours to get a bike and said it was one of his best years ever for sales because he had the inventory.

Thanks all! I spent the day running to local bike shops. I think I’ve settled on a Trek. I did try a Cannondale that was amazing but it was quite a bit more than the trek and I’m not sure I’ll ride it enough to account for the price difference.
