I have used a reformer a few times at a local studio I frequented before Covid, and remember really liking it. I am thinking of purchasing one for my home. Does anyone have any experience using/purchasing a reformer? Brands to avoid? Anything to stay away from?

I found a Pilates Power Gym that has a decent price point...but I don't know enough about reformers in general the Pilates Power Gym brand.

Can anyone weigh in?

I have a 10 y/o AeroPilates Reformer Rebounder that I still use several times per week and love. It's metal and wood. It's heavy and very long. I recently replaced the cords without issue. I can't help with other brands.

I have an Allegro 2 Reformer. It's just what I was familiar with from group reformer classes, so that's what I went with. Looking at the small ones, it didn't seem like you could do a lot of my favorite moves, like when you have your feet on the footbar and hold onto the headrests as you plank, push out, pull in, push up and down, repeat. Same with the snake and twist on the footbar. Maybe you could do it on smaller reformers, but they look like they would require a bit of adaptation and trust in a lightweight machine not to budge. The variety of movements are what I like about Pilates, so I stuck with what I know.

I do think that the compact machines could still work, if you are not expecting the same experience as the gym, though.

But if you want a top of the line machine, I do highly recommend the Allegro 2!

I'm a Pilates instructor. If you've really only used a reformer a few times in a group class I wouldn't recommend one for home until you've been practicing for a while. There's just so much to the work. But if you must, the two you have listed aren't really reformers. The IQ reformer from Balanced Body would be my choice for someone who is just using it in a very basic way. The Allegro and Allegro 2 would be overkill.

I forgot about this one. That would be a good choice too.
