I'm thinking of picking up a MacBook Air since my work-issued laptop is clunky and heavy and I need something for basic Word, Excel, and web-based use when I'm on the move.

Looks like the entry level MacBook Air is currently on sale at Best Buy (and other places for $899). For those who are more familiar, is this likely to go down substantially on Black Friday or the holidays, or should I just grab one now?

TIA!

Nope; I honestly don’t think so. I got our MacBook Pro in early December 2018 from Best Buy and I paid just about $1100 for it. Price drops are usually associated with new releases. I always use MacRumors.com as a reference as to what to buy and when to buy. I think my computer was the one that was in a mid cycle buy but they had released another Pro model with slightly more features so they lowered the price on the model I got. So I ended up paying slightly less for a mid cycle model (vs. the brand spanking new model that was $250+ more IIRC) so that still made sense for me. I debated between the model I got and the newly released MacBook Air and I remember liking the ram and iOS operating option for the Pro more than what was being included in the Air then (and it was supposed to be the best Air to date then) and the price difference was the mid cycle pro was $100 or so more than the Mac Book Air.

My work issued 2018 Air is about to get replaced with the new Air that just got released last month. I don't think the price will drop any lower and as PP indicated, is likely a reduced price on the older model.

My model only have 1 port...USB-C. The latest version has two USB-C ports. Double check that on the one you are looking at and I strongly discourage getting my version with only one port. With just one port you have to use a hub if you want to do anything other than charge the laptop like connect to a monitor or projector, charge a device, etc. I HATE having to use a hub because I have to bring it with me on work trips and I have one hub at the office and one hub at my home office. It sucks. I can't wait to get the newer model with 2 USB-C ports.

If you’re referring to the newest MacBook Air with the M1 chip, then about 2 months ago I purchased my son an open box from Best Buy for $575. I learned about it from Slickdeals, Best Buy kept offering open box versions of that Macbook in Excellent and Satisfactory conditions, and everyone said the MacBooks were in perfect condition and had been turned on just a few times (you can look at the stats when you turn on the MB). I bought my son a Satisfactory model and it was perfect, had only been turned on twice. For what it’s worth, I’m a technology attorney and years ago I had to research whether computers/hardware used briefly could be sold as new and they can’t - even if someone only turns it on once, it has to be sold as used, refurbished or open box. This is the slickdeals thread where it’s discussed https://slickdeals.net/f/15165172-ymmv-best-buy-open-box-excellent-macbook-air-m1-8gb-256gb-675-701?v=1&src=SiteSearch. Oh and I was able to buy an extended AppleCare warranty directly from Apple even though it was an open box MB.

Also, looking at Slickdeals I see that same model brand new was on sale a few weeks ago for $850. Given this, I’d guess it will be lower for Black Friday. You can see the recent deals on that Macbook at Best Buy here https://slickdeals.net/newsearch.php?forumchoice%5B%5D=4&forumchoice%5B%5D=9&forumchoice%5B%5D=10&forumchoice%5B%5D=13&forumchoice%5B%5D=25&forumchoice%5B%5D=30&forumchoice%5B%5D=38&forumchoice%5B%5D=39&forumchoice%5B%5D=41&forumchoice%5B%5D=44&forumchoice%5B%5D=53&forumchoice%5B%5D=54&forumchoice%5B%5D=71&q=MacBook+Air+best+buy&firstonly=1

OP, I just saw the Macbook Air is on sale for $780 at Microcenter https://www.microcenter.com/product/631512/apple-macbook-air-mgnd3ll-a-m1-late-2020-133-laptop-computer-gold. If you don't have a Microcenter by you, you might be able to get Best Buy or another store to price match.

ETA: It's $800 at Costco https://www.costco.com/.product.1481772.html
