View Full Version : Talk to Me About Kindle/E-Readers

I want a Kindle to take on backpacking/travel trips. This would save the weight of carrying books. I don't need bells and whistles but I need one with a good battery life, really small/lightweight. And it would be great if it was waterproof or I could put it in a life case. I assume that an iPad would not be what I want (??). I don't think I would mind a kids version--might be tougher. I appreciate any ideas. I have never used an e-reader. Thanks!!!

Kindle Paperwhite. Love it.
I 100% use it for library books (Overdrive or Libby). Easy!

Yep! I do occasionally buy a few ebooks from Amazon from indie authors the library doesn’t stock, but swear by my library for checking out books.

Kindle paperwhite! I love being able to carry it wherever I go. Bonus that mine is waterproof so I can read in the tub or the pool!

Why the paper white vs the regular one? Can you put them in a life case??

The lighting is, I think, better on the Paperwhite.
Here's one of the differences:
"Both the Amazon Kindle and the Amazon Kindle Paperwhite have a 6-inch display, and in both cases it’s designed to be glare-free. The main difference is how sharp it is, as while the basic Kindle’s screen is 167 pixels per inch, the Paperwhite is 300 pixels per inch, so text looks crisper and closer to how it would appear printed on paper."

There may be a new one coming out or maybe it has just come out- I assume the latter since DH is updating one for a birthday today. My kids’ favorite possession is their paperwhite. DH joins several libraries and loads them all for us.

I think we might do Kindles for the kids for Christmas, but I'm not totally sure if the Paperwhite is worth the extra money. It won't be their "big" gifts....so I'm thinking maybe this one? https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07DPMXZZ7/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_1?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1

ETA: OP, for you DEFINITELY the paperwhite. I love mine and use it every single day. My only slight complaint is that it feels like it needs charging way more often than advertised for me.

I bought a refurbished Kindle for DD2 and I eventually took the ads off it (that is $20) and it works fine. It gets way less use than mine but she has had it for three years now and it still works fine.

Yes I can go about a week on a Kindle charge and if I am lucky maybe 10 days. I have a 6 ft. cords so I can read in bed. I think a lot of battery wear has to do with keeping the screen off, not using bright (24) reading light and not keeping it on all of the time.

One thing that may help with battery life — I keep my Kindle Paperwhite in "airplane mode" all the time except when I am planning to download books. I'm not 100% sure that it uses more battery life when WiFi is on, but because that’s true for other devices, it’s worth a try. Note: if I frequently looked up words etc on Wikipedia, this wouldn’t work, but that’s not generally how I read.

Also, since I don’t listen to Audible books via the Kindle, I also keep Bluetooth turned off.

Thank you, I completely forgot about this tip! I remember at the beginning turning off wifi but I completely forgot to make it a habit. Also, how do you listen to audio books I have never figured that out!

I have an original Paperwhite. Dh has a newer one. We read a ton. We both only charge every 2-3 weeks. He keeps his in airplane mode, I don’t.

Great tips on preserving battery life. I loooove reading “real” books so the kindle won’t be used every day—just for travel to save weight. I am wondering about a refurbished one or do you think there will be good cyber Monday deals?

There will be deals.
I never thought I’d be team e-reader- I love books. But, I’m a total convert!

Def get paper white version than the basic one. I always love mine for travel purpose so my suitcase or backpack isn’t loaded down with books.

Definitely a Paperwhite. It's also the only waterproof version.

Love my paperwhite. I was an early adopter. I read the newspaper on it. I do about 1/3 library books and 2/3 buying books.

Annie, tell me about removing the offers? That's actually a huge issue for me for some reason. I really don't want ads but kindles are much more expensive without them! I like the idea of paying $20 to get that off.

My kids use them not exclusively, but almost. They are all phasing into the latest paperwhite, no ads, the cover from Amazon.

My 12yo boy spent at least an hour reading in the tub and kept heating up his bath water on Saturday afternoon. [emoji23]

Kid after my own heart! My fav pastime!

One thing I will add - unlike iphones, kindles last for years. So it's really a long term investment. I have dropped a couple in the tub over the years but my dh has only had two kindles in the last 10 years.

You just go into device settings and click remove offers and they charge your credit card on file.

How do you do this? Do you have a subscription or use your library to access it?

I probably can do newspapers through the library but I don't. I just get my subscriptions through Amazon. I get NY Times, Chicago Sun Times and National Catholic Reporter.

I get about 4 yrs on my kindle fires before I need to replace. But I'm also a very very heavy user. I'd say I use it for 2-3h a day during the week and much much more on the weekends. ;) I almost never read on anything else because I can adjust the font to what my kids refer to as font for the blind. I can even get magazines through the library though I mostly stick to books. I mean, I'd never pay for the Enquirer or Star but every once in a while, a headline will grab my attention and why not?

I also get audiobooks from the library. I have overdrive on my kindle - you'll want to check that you can put either overdrive or Libby on a paperwhite. I have a speaker in the bathroom that connects via bt and I can even listen to my books while I shower.
