I will start by saying I know nothing about this other than the old plug-in diffusers or horribly strong perfumed candles, etc. I would like to explore adding a non-toxic, non-overwhelming, light and natural home fragrance.

How in the world do I do this? What are the current options? I'm open to candles, essential oil diffusers, etc as long as they are non-toxic and light-handed in terms of adding scent (or adjustable in some way to keep the scent light). I prefer natural scents for sure and absolutely hate anything perfume-y and can't stand potpourri.

Or am I too picky and out of luck? LOL.

I boil cinnamon sticks if I want the house to occasionally smell better.
I love the Jo Malone diffusers but I don’t really know how they fair air quality wise. I’ve never bought one due to price but I love them whenever I’m in Nordstrom. Our store uses them in bathrooms and other public spaces.

My mother used to have those strong- smelling Yankee candles around her house. They gave me the worst headache and for years made me swear off scented candles. Then, at some point I was given a candle from Illume and fell in love. I adore the Balsam and Ceder scent at Christmas time and it doesn't bother me. I"m not sure why it doesn't bother me because mine is a soy candle and I"m allergic to soy. But I can leave them burning for hours in the kitchen while I"m working and it doesn't affect me at all. Since I got that candle, I have bought other Illume candles and love their sophisticated scents and pretty jars. They have a bunch of stuff on their website but I see they have some smaller gift versions on Anthropologie. https://illumecandles.com/collections/balsam-and-cedar/products/45253272000?variant=40751512682671 https://www.anthropologie.com/shop/springs-eden-tin-candle2?category=SEARCHRESULTS&color=068&searchparams=q%3Dillume&type=STANDARD&size=One%20Size&quantity=1

The plug ins give me raging headaches and burn my throat regardless of the scent or proximity. I like PPs idea of boiling cinnamon sticks, but I'm also a fan of my house not having a scent. If my house smells weird after I cook something, I spray Febreeze (in the lightest scent possible/unscented).
I do have a couple of candles that just sit open, unlit, and I can smell them faintly as I walk by. I'm too busy/distracted and pyrophobic to have candles lit inside the house.

Trader Joe’s has really nice, cheap soy candles. They have seasonal scents.

Glad to hear I’m not the only one who reacts badly to any kind of scented products — my allergies go into overdrive if I’m anywhere near plug-ins, scented sprays, candles, or my biggest nemesis, a large open bowl of potpourri. And I’m also very uneasy around lighted candles even if there aren’t any energetic young kids running around.

Last year I started to light ONE candle. In the kitchen, on the island. ONLY ONE at a time!! I light it late afternoon and DC blows it out by 7pm every night.

Up until that point, they terrified me (and DC). Finally, I decided to try ONE!!! I purchase only beeswax and soy from etsy. They are lightly scented. It works for me and has not triggered my crazy allergies...

Cinnamon sticks is a great idea too, but boiling water makes me nervous too ...
