I try to buy a new game every Christmas as a family gift. I haven’t really seen anything that looks great to me so I thought I would ask here for ideas. Things in the past we have enjoyed are Wits and Wagers, Ticket to Ride, Say Anything, Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza, and Exploding Kittens.

Any ideas for me?

Our current favorites are:
Machi Koro (with the expansion that has sushi bars; blanking on name)
Herd Mentality
Space Base
Alhambra
Harry Potter Hogwarts Battle (something like that)

I got A Game of Cat and Mouth last year for the kids and it has been a hit with everyone. My parents even enjoyed playing it with the kids. Not a strategy board game, more like Hungry, Hungry Hippos. Fast play and few rules to learn.

It's a classic game, but we've gotten back into Pente. It's for 2 to 4 players and plays a bit like Connect 4 on steroids. The game pieces are really pretty to boot. :)

We’ve enjoyed the Cards Against Humanity family edition we got last year.

Coup has been a favorite here. I am getting the expansion pack for Christmas this year.

Code names and Splendor. Catan is also fun. I got Disney code names for our family but we haven’t played it yet.

Have you tried Carcassonne? I got it for my sister last year and she loves it. She especially loves it with the expansion pack. It is a strategy game not unlike Catan or Ticket to Ride.

My family loves Unstable Unicorns. It is by the people that made Exploding Kittens and is a fast and fun game that even my 8yo loves.

For a simple game I had never tried before we just played Skyjo. I had never heard of it. It is fast and easy to learn.

Well, I was just getting on here to recommend both Carcassone and Unstable Unicorns! Guess we like similar games, Bisous!

Nimmit is also very easy to learn and a game we keep going back to.

We love a card game called "The Game". It's simple, but really fun. We also still love Yahtzee after all these years.

It’s not a board game but we like to play Rummy Kub. I even brought a travel version to play when we visited my family for thanksgiving.

Lots of good recommendations here! We also love Go Nuts for Donuts (https://amzn.to/32Su0rH), Telestrations (https://amzn.to/3dfgTmu), and Forbidden Island (https://amzn.to/31qQnEj).

I was going to ask a similar question!

Carcassonne was a hit here. I am looking for similar games that can be played by two people (empty nesters!).
Concept is a favorite in our family- it's like pictionary without drawing or talking. You use visual clues on the board.

We've gotten into Wingspan here. We really like birds, so that helps, but it's not necessary to enjoy the game :-)

We played 7 Wonders over Thanksgiving too, and everyone liked it.

Another card game we like as a family of five and play with my parents is Five Crowns.

Board games are on sale B2G1 free at Target through 12/11. I just bought 6 games, several of which are listed in this thread, for $75 total.

Is this game easy to learn how to play? I feel like we have so many games that I need to watch a YouTube video multiple times to learn how to play and then I forget after we're done and never want to play again!

I bought the Target exclusive Monopoly game, and a new Minions game from the same people who made Exploding Kittens (Dd2 loves all things Minion related).

In general my kids like Here to Slay, Llamas Unleashed, Unstable Unicorns, etc. type games plus old standards like Life, Battleship, and Monopoly. Mexican Train is also fun. I think one of my kids might be getting me the Oregon Trail game.

I agree that games need to be easy. We did play My First Catan a few years ago with some friends and I liked the speed of that one…..I have yet to play the full version….I imagine hours long versions of Stratego and Risk here….not my cup of tea.

I’m with you. I get overwhelmed with games that have complicated rules and the kids usually have to figure it out and teach us lol
It’s easy to learn but concept requires a lot of creativity, and in the higher levels -each card has different levels - it can be difficult but we have a lot of fun with it and don’t take it too seriously. Dh has no patience for the higher levels and gets frustrated- he likes strategy games and bananagrams :)
concept May be a bit much for people who are only used to taboo and Scattegories and those sorts of games, which we too love but are much simpler. People who are into board games might enjoy this. I found it by looking on boardgamegeek and watching a video to see how it was played.

I immediately knew DS would love it and turns out DD and I do, too. Dd only took one game to her new apartment - concept! And Ds also has a copy at college so we have three, and I gave it to my sil, and it’s her favorite game now, which brings us to four copies lol You might say we are obsessed lol
The kids and I like word games, games that require creativity, humor, etc. one of our old favorites (We have been playing since DS was in elementary school!) is The Metagame. It’s very flexible, portable, and requires creativity. Another one is the New Yorker cartoon caption game!
