starter skateboard?

Another gift idea I have yet don't know where to begin... What is a good starter skateboard for a child? Or a young teen? And am I asking for broken bones buying these for my kids?

We got one for my son last year. I'll get the info and come back to respond. I was able to get a good helmet and knee/elbow/wrist guards on amazon. No broken bones yet - knock on wood.

I just noticed your kids ages in your signature and mine are around the same. The 08 DD is really into rollerskating. Not sure if that's a possibility, but we've had SO much fun with ours (me too!)

I was just going to post something similar. DS1 (12) wants a Santa Cruz skateboard. We saw them at the Vans store the other day.

Growing up in San Diego, my friends and I all had Sector 9 longboards. Longboards are super easy to learn on compared to the shorter trick boards.

I think one is brand new in fact still wrapped. She prefers the original.

She also got a unicycle which desperately had to have ... she used it for a few months then gave up on. I insist on full gear all wheeled activities. helmet, wrist, knee and elbow guards.

Ironically, the kid who climbs 20ft into trees, hangs upside down from the swing bars and uses the skateboard & uni broke her arm when she hit a pothole around the corner from the house.

Ah yes, the skateboard search! DD wanted one, and I did an online chat at a skate shop to get a recommendation based on her height/foot size. They also explained that softer wheels and longer boards are good for cruising, while harder wheels and short boards are better for tricks.

I first got a cheap Target one, and ended up returning it as my 12 year old niece told me cheap boards can be frustrating for beginners and discourage them from skating (bad thing? Good thing?)

Okay, I ordered a rimable board and might still get something else too. I doubt either of my kids is going to get seriously into skateboarding, and reading that the larger, softer wheels are better for going over small rocks and the like sounded good to me. DD does have skates, which a PP had mentioned, but we live on a hill and often have sand and rocks on the road which turn out to be pretty harsh obstacles for roller skating. For $20 I don’t care that much how much she ultimately uses the board. Just as long as she doesn’t break a bone ;)

As a kid, my sister got a skateboard for Christmas when she was about 8. I was 6 and desperately wanted one. My parents got me a little pink plastic skateboard that I LOVED and used well into my late teens. In my 30's, DH got me a long board, it was never the same :)!

I did hit my fair share of rocks and took MANY tumbles. DC's crashed my long board while sitting on it following her father down a hill, she is proud of those scars :).
