DH's flakiness is becoming legendary. To be honest, this isn't so much a complaint about him--sadly I can see myself making some of the same mistakes he's made! It is the confluence of factors that are just so annoying today. DH is now working in the office two days a week. While it has been a bit of an adjustment we're just grateful he can still WFH the other three! Except he forgot his power cord at work yesterday and without it his laptop will gradually lose power and he won't be able to work. And work is 55 miles away on one of the busiest stretches of highway anywhere in the US! So now he has to give up at least two hours to run back to work to get it and put over 100 miles on our car. (Did I mention gas is expensive right now? Lol.)

But on top of that, he's leaving right now which leaves ME in a lurch because he was going to "supervise" DS3 and DD who have half days and I have a parent teacher conference that I no longer have a babysitter for. At ages 11 and 9 they aren't tiny but I still hate leaving them all by themselves! Grrr. Part of me wants to leave them. Part of me doesn't feel comfortable doing it. And to think I COULD have requested a zoom conference call but chose to come in this time. I guess that last one is on me!

Anyway. Here's to the flaky mistakes of others that somehow end up derailing our best laid plans!

Uuugh, I hate it when stuff like that all piles on at once! Probably too late now, but I would have sent the kids for a 100 mile round trip with Dad. :rotflmao: Guess they'll get to sit in the hall with a book while you do conferences? May tomorrow be better and I'm thinking a laptop charger would make just the most perfect Christmas gift this year!

That's a good idea!! Except it might be awkward for him there at the building...And yeah. Laptop charger is a GREAT idea!

ETA: DH just SUGGESTED taking them with him. So I'm totally saved! :)

We are lucky to have multiple MacBooks at home, so if one of my kids forgets their cord, they just take mine.

And that is a super painful drive to have to do again. It would have been easier and not much more expensive to go to the apple store and pick up a new charger cord.

Sounds like it worked out in the end but I'd definitely be gifting a new charger!

If that were me I would probably eat the cost of a new charger and head over to Staples and buy one on my own and not even worry about being reimbursed. I get your issue though. Hugs. Hope everything ended well.

Yup simple solution do it!! Sorry that it left you in a bind, but honesty it’s nothing out of the ordinary to forget to pack up everything especially when swamped at work.

My DH has left his cord at home and has had to come home and get it multiple times. I suggested getting a cord to leave at work and he looked at me like I was a genius!

To make you feel better, I work for org that’s hybrid. We go into the office 2-3x a month and all of us at work have extra set of chargers for our laptop/phones, etc at our work desk. I also keep several different chargers around at home, as well in both vehicles.

Get another one and put it in DH stocking and move on. Not a big deal especially with so many devices and phones people have in per household, so extra ones always come in handy!

I’ve done this several times. Lately I’ve gotten better with the power cord, because I put a post it note on my office door with a reminder for the power cord. Now I forget the wireless mouse. Hate the trackpad on my laptop

I keep a whole setup (keyboard, mouse, monitor, and charging cable) at both my office and at home and just take the computer back and forth. For a long time I just used the laptop without add ons at home, but then when I worked from home full time for a year in 2020-2021 I got the extras.

Now of course this doesn’t help when I forget the computer itself at either home or the office, which I have managed to do a couple of times...

I have keyboard, monitor, and laptop stand at both my schools (I work at 2 schools), and I use DH’s set up at home. I think we have a couple of old wired computer mouses (mice?), so I should stash one at each location too

lol my school is 0.25mi from home. ... and I still got a 2nd charger after I left mine at school one weekend and realized it at 9pm on a Friday night (the building closes at 8p)

At least it is a good time of the year to gift him one ;)

DH has taken the kids to the office before when it was just a drive down to pick up something. A quick stop for a fun snack and the kids will see it as an adventure.

Definitely get a backup charger. My DH forgot his keyboard and mouse in the office a few weeks ago. I had one I had bought for me that I hadn't yet installed so I gave him that one for home (I guess I am living with what I have for a while). It is ALWAYS worth having a backup :).

DH now has THREE chargers for his work laptop. One for home, one at the office, and one in his backpack for travel. All from not having one when he needed it.

The cost of gas for a 55 mile drive would have me sending him to the nearest store to buy one to keep at home.

Its a 110 mile drive round trip!!! DH is under the impression that getting a cord for a Macbook Pro would be extremely expensive. I haven't even looked...off to now!

I bought one to keep at home from amazon and it works great in a pinch. It's not apple brand, but totally fine for how little I use it. If I can find the link I'll share it.

Depends. What if it happens again on a day that is even worse to have that happen on?

Dh's work gives them an allotment of tech credit to buy extras like that. Maybe your dh's work offers something similar?

Just $35 and an additional 20% off coupon.

Target has a 96w charger for $79. I would consider it or one from Anker or GoGreen from Amazon. We have a couple of different chargers from Anker and one from UGreen and are happy with them. They are a little slower than the official Apple one but since it is usually plugged in when we use the computer it still charges it just fine.

This U Green charger (https://smile.amazon.com/UGREEN-Gallium-Nitride-Charger-Black/dp/B091BGMKYS/ref=mp_s_a_1_1_sspa?crid=2JJ8WKF3SCMJN&keywords=ugreen+c+charger&qid=1670876327&sprefix=ugreen+c+charger%2Caps%2C148&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUExMkJNRUJKSFJHRktGJ mVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwNjY1OTg0MUxCNEhJNUlUMERZRCZlbmN yeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwNTc3MjQ2MVFMMFE0TThOMzE0WiZ3aWRnZ XROYW1lPXNwX3Bob25lX3NlYXJjaF9hdGYmYWN0aW9uPWNsaWN rUmVkaXJlY3QmZG9Ob3RMb2dDbGljaz10cnVl) is our our current favorite for versatility in our house.

Whoa! Not to us, lol!

So, 110 miles - that's say, 4 gallons of gas (not including wear and tear) - so $18, and 3-4 hours of his time (when he technically should be working). Do that a few times and you have paid for the charger (I see them for $79 at Best Buy) and if you have a charging brick that will provide enough wattage, he only needs a cable ($19).

If he was using the current mileage reimbursement rate (which includes wear and tear), it would be $68.75. Don't discount the amount it is really costing for that drive.

He says he'll ask IT for an extra cord and he might actually get it. I'd be more inclined to buy an extra charger/cord if I thought that would be the end of leaving things behind at work. Unfortunately, it was only the latest item he's left behind. Usually honestly he leaves stuff at home and just kind of "lives with it" until he gets home. He's left his drive behind twice now and can hardly work without it and that isn't something he can have a backup of! Still, it would be great to get a cord but again, DH is convinced he can get one. I'll encourage him to follow up on that!

Yes to this! If his employer paid him mileage yes that trip would be worth $68.75 (110 miles x.625 per mile).

My DH is like that. For awhile, he was constantly upgrading his phone/blackberry since he was always losing the old one. He even went on a business trip one year and forgot to pack PANTS (wore shorts for travel)! Keeping two offices makes things even more challenging.

I hope your DH is able to get a second charger from IT. That seems like a reasonable request!

I hope he's able to get a backup charger from IT! IMO if the company is going to offer hybrid work they should spring for backups of everything for in the office, he's not the only one that's going to forget something and the replacement costs are quickly recouped by being able to just get to work. Hopefully he can make that argument to IT ;)
