Anyone know what kind of varnish is safe for homemade wooden furniture?

I have someone making me some wooden furniture for the babies, and we are trying to find some baby-safe varnish to use - ie. baby-safe meaning not for them to drink , but once they start to teeth and are probably going to chew on the wood.
Is just a typical water-based varnish OK?
