Hi all,
Our playdoh has finally dried out and I want to make some from scratch. All the recipes ask for something called alum. What is it and where do I find it? Tried the grocery store to no avail. Craft store?
thanks!

It should be in the spices or baking section (maybe where canning supplies are).
But to help you out for real, here are a couple of recipes.
This one I've made (the microwave one)-
http://www.omsi.edu/visit/playground...m?activityid=5
and this one, I'm going to try soon. The colours are supposed to turn out pretty good.
Mix 6 cups of flour,
1 cup of salt
4 pkgs same colour Kool-aid
Bring 4 cups of water and 6 TBLS oil to a boil. Pour liquid into flour mixture and knead.
Holy cow, this recipe would make a TON of playdough. For the recipes I've used, a few different ones, I think I've only used one cup of flour, at most 1.5, and it was PLENTY. I personally would look for a different recipe so you don't have enough playdough for the entire public school system! Either that, or divide it up into different colors. I would think you could get plenty of each color, of 4 - 6 colors, with that amount of flour.
You can always cut the recipe into thirds. It isn't that difficult.
I actually preferred making the full amount. I keep a big tupperware of it and always have fresh and neat play doh at the drop of a hat. It also makes a great take along gift that you can grab last minute for play dates or for entertaining the entire public school system. ;-)

I'm really liking that idea. Is anybody else grossed out and a little worried about the little one playing with play dough over and over, after playing with it while sick (like a cold with really runny nose)? It's hard for me to throw stuff out and buy new when it looks perfectly fine, but this has had me worried. A big ol' batch of homemade, though? I could replace the ick stuff every week!
I never thought of that. Great idea, Benet!
Thanks for posting this! I am going to make a batch this weekend. We are still stuck in the house and Madeline is starting to go a little stir crazy.
I've never made my own playdoh, and that looks like a great recipe, Veronica. Thanks for posting it!
My babysitter just bailed on me for tomorrow morning. I was trying to figure out what we could do - now I know! I'll have DS help me make it, so they can both play with it later in the afternoon!
And Barbara, I LOVE the idea of doing a huge tupperware thing of it! And Benet, thanks for totally grossing me out! I'm off to get rid of the remaining, apparently germ-ridden, play doh now. :P
