Help, I need to find a cradle mattress

I've got a cradle that has a very old mattress. I was told that I may not be able to find the correct size mattress at the store and I should look online. The cradle is 33 years old and has been used for 5 children, but in excellent condition with relatively narrow slats. It was very well taken care of. I need a mattress to fit a space roughly 17.5 x 35.5 inches. A suggestion was made that I find a mattress that fits pretty well and fill up the remaining space with the bumper. I thought you were not supposed to use the bumpers like that. Does anyone have any suggestions?
