I bought a $20 set from Target and glued it down to a piece of fiber board - the set came with 3 trains - the brio trains work with the set - both battery powered and manual.... the thomas battery powered were a little big for the set.

DS loves to play with the set.

I do have a brio set that is boxed up until he is a little older.

but.... since the in-laws want to get her a set.... I would ask them to buy her a train table this year... and maybe a really nice brio/ thomas set for next year when she is 3 and a little more "responsible"

We've got the wooden sets and have brio and Target generic tracks. We do have Thomas engines. I'd recommend against a battery powered engine. I think DS is much more imaganitive in playing when he pushes them himself rather than just watching them go around and around. He has crashes and sends another engine to help, puts things on the track "oh no there's a shoe on the track!" for engines to run into, etc. We have a couple battery powered ones and when they have working batteries, he mostly just stands and watches them go. Not so interactive.
