once our blind dog took a dive over the edge and landed on the couch. (after that, he memorized the stairs and it was never an issue again.) not spiral, or anything fancy, just the stairs on an angle. it's open-air to our living room.

I guess you'll have to get one of those gate ment to enclose odd shape areas. Attatch one end against the wall at the foot of the stairs and the other to the side of the stairs.
