Default Is Ikea Patrull Fast gate the same as Kidco Safeway Gate?

I read this review of the Kidco Safeway Gate:

    http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...357254-3814317

On one of the reviews, it says Kidco Safeway Gate is the exact same as Ikea Patrull Gate. Is this true?

We have the Safeway gate -- I've only seen the IKEA gate briefly in the store, but it does look very similar, and the price is much more affordable.

Anxiously awaiting comments from anyone who has used the IKEA version. . .I'm babyproofing in 2 weeks when I get back from vacation. . .

I called Kidco, and whoever answered says the measurements are different? I don't know what to make of it. Since there is no IKEA in Albany, I just ordered my Kidco from Babycatalog.com .

Does anyone want to split the cost of a 1 year membership?

The only difference it seems is that the Kidco gate can fit doorways as narrow as 24 1/2 inches wide, while the IKEA gate only fits doorways 28 1/2 inches wide or wider. My doorway to my kitchen is 25 1/2 inches and the Kidco Safeway is one of the only gates that fits in it. I love my Kidco gate, but if my doorways weren't so narrow I'd definately look into getting the IKEA gate. It looks like a great bargain, especially if you need to install more than one gate.

I looked at the picture of the Ikea gate online and I see what the main difference is. The Kidco gate is made of two metal panels that connect to span a large variety of doors (24 3/4" to 43 1/2") and you can actually buy an extension panel to go up to 66". The Ikea gate is only one metal panel so its span is not very flexible (28 1/2-31"). The hardware looks to be exactly the same. We love our Safeway gates and think that they are very easy to use, but safe. If your doorway happens to fall in the narrow range that the Ikea gate fits, then I would say go for it! It is less than a 1/3 of the price of the Kidco one.

So can anyone confirm that the IKEA gate mirrors the Safeway gate's directional feature which prevents the gate from swinging back out over the top of the stairs? For use at the top of stairs, I'd be concerned at any price if the gate could open out that way...
