Safe paint for a toddler stool?

I purchased a white toddler stool from WalMart with the intention to paint it for my son. Now my husband is worried about safe paints. Since anything has the potential to go into the mouth, is there a recognized safe paint that I can buy? TIA

Latex paint is non toxic. I have also seen washable paints for childrens rooms that would be nice used on furniture.

On a side note, The federal government banned lead based paint in 1978, any homes built before this time should be tested for lead paint especially those with small children.
