AARRGGHH!! We just had our new king-bed delivered and it won't fit up the stairs of our brand new home, which is where all of the bedrooms are (including the master bedroom). Actually, we have a California king bed which is even 4" narrower than a regular king bed but it still won't fit.
I think it's absolutely ridiculous that we now live in a large, expensive home built by a respected semi-custom home builder but can only have a queen-size bed in our gigantic master bedroom. I'm sure that problem would also greatly reduce our resale value.
The problem is that a part of the ceiling from upstairs hangs down too low over the staircase so the bed won't fit going up the stairs. I think it's possible that they could fix the problem but my guess is that it would be a huge job--one that would make our home a fiflthy construction zone and require that we not live here while they're doing the work. It's also possible that for structural support reasons, that they can't even fix the problem.
I've already left a message for and paged our customer care manager but haven't heard back yet. Right now our bed's sitting in the dining room. I'm furious right now at them and would appreciate any insight that you all can offer. (BTW, I've been offline for a few weeks now with the move and have missed these boards!) Would any of you happen to know if there's anywhere in the building codes that would address needing to build a new home in which a king-sized bed could fit into the master bedroom? (I doubt it would be worded that way but it may still address the issue.) Have any of you had this same problem with a newly built home? Are any of you a lawyer who could advise me of what I could do? (FWIW, our home was a spec home and is one of their many floorplans that they offer so we had no impact on the design of that area.) We had to sign some clause in our contract about going to arbitration rather than suing but I don't know how that would affect this whole mess.
Oh, in addition to not being able to get a king-sized bed upstairs, we also can't have a side-by-side refrigerator because of the way they designed the space--the refrigerator side door wouldn't open more than 90 degrees (thus can't get into those drawers). Again, I can't believe they'd design a home that costs as much as this one does in such a way that you can't have a SBS refrigerator. At least in that case, we were OK with ordering a bottom freezer instead. WE are NOT OK with having to sleep on a queen bed (especially considering my husband's 6'9"--thus, the need for the longer CA King bed).
Well, this is my first post ever in the bitching forum but with all of the problems we've been encountering with our new home, it may not be my last! :)
Thanks for letting me vent and for any feedback that you can provide.
Edited to add...in case anyone thinks there may be an alternative way to get the bed into the master bedroom, there's not. The widows are not large enough to accommodate a bed, nor are there any doors leading to a master bedroom balcony or something like that.
