    Default Fair Debt Collection Act

Here is a link to the Federal Trade Commision website: http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/credit/fdc.htm

That page summarizes the federal law that applies to debt collection. It sounds like this collection agency currently in contact with you is really pushing the limits. They are supposed to notify you in writing within 5 days of first contact of the amount you owe, who you owe it to, and what to do if you believe you don't owe it. Further down the page, it lists all the things they are not allowed to do, like threaten and harass you.

Good luck. I've had to deal with a collection agency before when my SS# got stolen. As soon as I sent them a letter letting them know their contacts with me were in violation of federal law, I got a much better response and got to speak with a supervisor.
