If I understand correctly, the only way to get notified of a private message is if you go through the main page for all the books/forums.
I rarely ever go to this page b'cos I use bookmarked topics from the Lounge to just jump into the lounge. I have had unread messages for 2-3 months b'cos I didn't know I had any!
Is there any way to change this?

Yes, if you click on the USER MENU button and then "edit your preference" you will see this option:
Notify via email when you receive a private message?
Click yes and the board will send you an email when you get a PM!
