My Mom didn't start when I was a baby, but when I was young she started giving me a Spode Christmas Tree place setting. I now have 8 settings plus lots of extras.
Another idea is a dated Christmas ornament. Lenox and Wallace Silversmith have some lovely collections.
That being said, IMHO I would do the same for both daughters.

I am doing the same thing for any daughters I have, the pearl string idea, because I heard of it when still single and thought it was lovely. I plan to give the same to my daughter in law (if my son marries a woman).
i think giving the same item cuts down on any possible jealosy.
